College Bowl Predictions – Week 13

Written November 19, 2008 by Jack Jones

The BCS National Championship game is mostly likely going to be the winner of the Big 12 against the winner of the SEC.  The Florida Gators are playing like the best team in the nation right now and they should get past Alabama in the conference title game, all but insuring their spot in the FedEx National Championship.  The Big 12 is a little trickier.  All kinds of different scenarios could play out, but we’re taking the Texas Longhorns, who will be the choice for the Big 12 Championship game (and the favorite to win the game) if Texas Tech loses to Oklahoma this week.  Right now Oklahoma is favored by 7 over Texas Tech.

For the Fiesta Bowl we are looking at a possible Oklahoma vs Ohio State match up that would be intriguing to say the least.  The Buckeyes have looked great since their loss to USC.  Even with two losses the Buckeyes are a great choice for the Fiesta because of their tremendous following.  The same goes for the Sooners, who have a great fan base and would get the bid if they don’t leapfrog Texas in the BCS standings for the championship with a win over Texas Tech this week.

In the Sugar Bowl the most likely candidate would be the loser of the SEC Title game, and we’re assuming that will be Alabama in this case.  The Tide have had a great season, but if they can’t get past the hottest team in the nation, the Florida Gators, they’ll have to settle for the Sugar Bowl.  Alabama is most likely to be paired with Utah if the Utes can stay undefeated.  This spot would normally be reserved for the winner of the Big East, but the Sugar would likely take an undefeated Utah team over Pitt, or whoever else ends up winning the Big East conference.

The Rose Bowl likes to stick with traditional pairings, so the Pac-10 champ and the Big 10 champ are most likely to land spots in Pasadena.  USC can lose our to Oregon State, who beat them and is in position with win the Pac-10 if they can win out, but the Beavers have to beat Arizona and Oregon in back to back weeks to keep the Trojans out of the Rose Bowl.  Penn State should end up on top of the Big 10 and earn their trip to the Rose Bowl.  It isn’t what the Lions had planned, but their BCS title hopes were dashed with a loss to Iowa two weeks ago.  As long as Penn State doesn’t falter again, they’ll end up in this prestigeous bowl.

The champion of the ACC gets an automatic bid to the Orange Bowl and we are projecting that the Miami Hurricanes are in the best position to with the Atlantic Coast conference.  The Hurricanes will have to beat a tough Maryland team to get into the BCS, but they have improved as the season has worn on.  The most likely team to be paired with Miami in the Orange Bowl is Pitt, who will likely end up as the Big East Champion, but don’t be surprised if the Orange Bowl passes on the Panthers and chooses someone like Boise State if the Broncos remain undefeated.  Boise State is a 6 point favorite to win this week and stay unbeaten.
