Week 15 College Football Odds

Written December 1, 2008 by Steve Janus

The biggest game of the week, maybe even the entire college football season, is set as the SEC Championship game between the Florida Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide.  Both teams are coming off of impressive wins and the winner of Saturday’s game will no doubt be headed to the BCS Championship game.  It just doesn’t get any bigger than that.  With their impressive string of performances, the Flordia Gators are 10 point favorites over Alabama this week.

Oklahoma did what they had to against Oklahoma State last week, earning a victory, boosting their BCS rating, and getting into the Big 12 Championship game.  They’ll face Missouri, fresh off of a disappointing loss against Kansas last week.  Linesmakers have the Sooners favored big as Oklahoma opens as a 15.5 point favorite.

With a win last Saturday over Maryland the Boston College Eagles earned a trip to the ACC Championship game to face Virginia Tech, who also earned their spot in the game by winning last Saturday as the Hokies defeated Virginia.  The ACC has been up and down all season long with no real dominant team emerging.  I think the point spread for the game accurately demonstrates that as Boston College versus Virginia Tech this week is set as a pick ‘em game.

This Thursday Big East rivals clash as Louisville visits Rutgers.  Rutgers has been one of the hottest teams in the Big East lately, winning their last 5 games, 4 of them in blowout fashion including a 54-34 romp over Pittsburgh.  Louisville, on the other hand, has lost their last 4 games in a row and they’ve managed just one conference victory this season.  Rutgers is favored by 11.5 points over the Louisville Cardinals.

Friday night football features 7-5 Buffalo against the 12-0 Ball State Cardinals in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championship.  Buffalo won 5 of their last 6 games to finish 5-3 in their half of the MAC.  The Bulls will get all they can handle facing a Ball State team that finished the regular season undefeated.  Ball State is favored by 14.5 points against Buffalo this week.

All that USC has to do this week is beat UCLA and the Trojans earn another Pac-10 title, as well as a guaranteed spot to face Penn State in the Rose Bowl.  The Trojan’s beat Notre Dame handily last week, but what helped them the most was Oregon State’s loss to Oregon.  That currently gives USC the best conference record.  USC is a 30 point favorite over UCLA this week, so it doesn’t look like anyone is anticipating an upset.

The Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen do their annual battle for the Commander in Chief’s Trophy this week.  Army has had a tough season to say the least, earning just 3 wins, while Navy has enjoyed quite a bit of success at 7-4 on the year.  The Midshipman are rightfully favored by 11 points over Army this Saturday.

Two teams that were supposed to compete for the Big East title, South Florida and West Virginia, slug it out this weekend at West Virginia.  South Florida already has 7 wins on the year, but all 4 of their losses have come in conference play.  West Virginia could have helped their case for a major bowl game last week with a win over Pitt, but the Mountaineers came up just short.  In Saturday’s game West Virginia is a 7 point favorite.

It’s been an up and down year for Pittsburgh and for UConn, who are currently 2nd and 5th in the Big East, respectively.  UConn beat the Cincinnati, the conference champ, earlier this year, but they are now just 3-3 in conference play.  Pitt knocked off West Virginia last week, but the Panthers are still 2.5 point underdogs at Connecticut this Saturday.
