North Carolina hosts Florida State as Bobby Bowden and former Miami coach Butch Davis renew their rivalry. The Seminoles have been up and down all season while Carolina was taken to the woodshed at Georgia Tech earlier this season. UNC is a 3 point favorite.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets look to keep the momentum rolling when they travel to Charlottesville to take on the upstart Virginia Cavaliers. Georgia Tech lost this game last year at home 24-17 even though they were 14 point favorites. Odds makers remember this as the Jackets are favored by just 4 points this weekend.
Purdue might have pulled the biggest upset of the season last Saturday at home against Ohio State as the Boilermakers notched their second win of the season. They will look for win number three at home against an awful Illinois team. The Illini are getting 10.5 points on the road according to the latest NCAA football spreads.
South Florida will face its second tough test in a row when they travel to Pittsburgh to clash with a strong Panthers team. This game will be all about the youngsters as true freshman Pitt RB Dion Lewis leads the nation in rushing and redshirt QB BJ Daniels has been electric for the Bulls. Pitt is a touchdown favorite.
Big Red fans are fretting after Nebraska was blown out at home against Texas Tech. Husker nation will really go A-wall if they fall to Iowa State during homecoming. The quarterback situation for Nebraska is up in the air and won’t be decided until Saturday. Nebraska is giving 18 points in Memorial Stadium. Notre Dame showed it can play with the big boys against USC, but beating them is another story. A tough Boston College team will enter South Bend where they always seem to play well (eg Flutie miracle). The Eagles have been one of the more surprising teams in the ACC this year and catch ND at a good time. BC is getting 8 points.
Alabama has the honor of being the #1 ranked team in the AP Poll, but it doesn’t mean much in Week 8 of the season. Tennessee comes to town Saturday with an upset on their mind. Vols QB Jonathan Crompton is mistake prone and Alabama is very good at turning mistakes into points. The Tide are 15 point favorites.
Oregon better watch this weekend at Washington and not look ahead to their October 31st match-up at home against USC. The Huskies are much improved and play exceptionally well at home. UW QB Jake Locker presents issues for any opposing defense. The Ducks are a 7.5 point favorite Saturday.
Michigan hosts Penn State in a key Big 10 game this weekend. Joe Pa has had his issues against the Maze and Blue but snapped a nine game series losing streak last year with a 46-17 victory. The outcome of this game will largely depend on the play of Michigan’s young quarterbacks. Penn State is a 4.5 point favorite.
Arkansas will attempt to pull off another shocker at Mississippi after almost taking down the Gators in the Swamp. This game will be a battle between two of the better quarterbacks in the country with Razorback QB Ryan Mallett and Ole Miss QB Jevan Snead. Arkansas is a 4.5 point dog.
Other notable games
Iowa -1.5 @ Michigan State
TCU -1.5 @ BYU
Florida -22 @ Mississippi State
