College Football Picks & Predictions: Week 14
Written November 25, 2008 by Anthony Moretti
We’ll get this week’s picks kicked off on Thursday as Texas hosts Texas A&M. Texas needs to embarrass the Aggies this week just to keep pace with Oklahoma. The 35 point spread is intimidating, but I see this one ending something like 56-14.
On to Friday and West Virginia -3.5 at Pitt. Both teams blew chances at the Big East title (assuming Cincinnati gets past Syracuse this week as 22 point faves), but both should still land in a decent-sized bowl game. West Virginia is the better team in the match up and they win on the road 38-24.
Also on Friday is an SEC match up between LSU and Arkansas. Both teams are having difficult seasons, but Arkansas is just plain awful this year. I’ll take LSU and give the 5 points with little hesitation. Final score LSU 35, Arkansas 10.
Boise State looks to stay undefeated against Fresno State this Friday and I think the Broncos get the job done at home. The spread for the game is 21 points, though, which I think is a little steep for a Fresno team that does a pretty good job on offense. I’ll take Fresno +21 with the final looking like a 42-28 Boise victory.
Oklahoma takes a spot in the biggest game of the week yet again on Saturday as they visit Stillwater, OK and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Look, the Cowboys have had a great year, but the confidence Oklahoma is riding right now can’t be matched. Sooners make their case to pass Texas in the BCS with a 55-27 victory, easily covering the 7 point spread.
Texas Tech gets a chance to vent some frustration from the Oklahoma game as they face the not-so-tough Baylor Bears on Tech’s home turf. The Red Raiders should jump right back to their winning ways and blow over the Bears and the 20 point spread. Texas Tech 63, Baylor 28.
Big-time college football rivals meet Saturday when Florida visits Florida State. The old Seminoles seem to be back on the winning track, but they aren’t equipped to compete with the Gators. Florida wins (and covers) 38-13.
Auburn vs Alabama is one hardcore rivalry, but Auburn is having a “down” year to say the least. Bama is #1 for a reason and shouldn’t have any trouble with the Tigers, but Bama’s style doesn’t lend to a blowout. I’ll say the Tide win 21-13, but Auburn covers the 14.5 point spread.
USC/Notre Dame is another game that used to have some draw, but won’t get as much attention this year because of the huge gap in talent between these two teams. Can USC really be favored by 30 points over Notre Dame? Yeah, they can, and they deserve to be. Can they cover it, though? That’s the question. This one could go either way, but a USC win to the tune of 42-7 isn’t out of the question.
We’ll wrap up with another state rivalry with Oregon facing Oregon State. As these teams aren’t in a huge market, and USC takes most of the press in the Pac-10, this game might get overlooked, but it’s one of the best match ups of the week. Oregon has a great offense, but Oregon State is at home and playing for the Pac-10 Championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl. Everyone has already assumed that USC would still make their way to the Rose Bowl, but I’m not so sure after watching the Beavers play well week after week. I’ll take Oregon State to win, and cover, 31-24.
