College Football Picks for Week 15

Written December 1, 2008 by Anthony Moretti

This week we’ll start out on Thursday with Louisville at Rutgers.  The Scarlet Knights are 11 point favorites, but I think rightfully so.  Since losing 5 of their first 6 games, the Knights have been on a mission, winning 5 games in a row by an average of 20 points per contest.  I’ll take Rutgers -11 in on Thursday and expect a final of something like Rutgers 38, Louisville 20.

In the battle for the Commander in Chief’s Trophy (Army/Navy), you’d be hard-pressed to convince me that, even in a heated rivalry game, that Navy isn’t 11 points better than Army.  The Naval Academy wins this one 35-10.

Pittsburgh has played great on the road (4-1) and have had slightly better luck in the Big East than the UConn Huskies.  I’ll take the 3 points and the Panthers on Saturday with the potential for a 21-17 Pitt upset.

West Virgnia may have blown their chance at a conference title, but South Florida has been the real disappointment in the Big East with just 2 conference wins.  West Virginia wins 34-14.

The USC Trojans just need a win over UCLA to guarantee their Pac-10 title.  The Trojans are 30 point favorites, but won’t leave any question that they should be considered good enough to spark some controversy in the BCS standings.  USC dominates 52-6.

At the beginning of the season everyone thought that Arizona State was the best team in the state.  The Arizona Wildcats have proved that wrong.  Arizona is a 10.5 point favorite, but that’s still giving the Sun Devils too much credit.  Wildcats win 38-24.

It’s alway tough to leave the mainland and head to Hawaii to face the Rainbow Warriors.  Cincinnati has legitimately been the best team in the Big East, however, and should make quick work of Hawaii a 7.5 point favorites.  Predicted Score:  Cincinnati 31, Hawaii 17.

The ACC Championship features Boston College and Virginia Tech with Boston College as 1 point favorites.  Both teams controlled their own destiny last week and both game out on top.  Boston College has been the more impressive team down the stretch, though, and their defense has outplayed just about everyone in the conference.  Boston College 24, Virginia Tech 21.

Florida’s win over Florida State last week didn’t exactly make the Gators look vulnerable, did it?  Alabama did some nice work of their own, notching a 36-0 shutout over Auburn last Saturday.  Linesmakers have made the Gators 10 point favorites.  The SEC Championship will be an interesting game, to be sure, but I simply don’t think that the Crimson Tide have played good enough competition leading up to this point.  We don’t know enough about them.  Florida has had more convincing wins over similar opponents, but the Tide did beat the same Ole Miss team that knocked Florida off earlier in the year.  The Gators have improved by leaps and bounds, however, and should walk away with the SEC title and a spot in the BCS Championship.  Florida 35, Alabama 14.

Oklahoma beat Oklahoma State last week and jumped Texas in the BCS, giving the Sooners the right to play Missouri in the Big 12 Championship game.  The Sooners have been unstoppable since their loss to Texas earlier this season, and that shouldn’t change this week as Oklahoma is a 16.5 point favorite.  If Missouri’s loss against Kansas last week is any indication of the defense they’ll play against OU this week, we’ll have another Sooner blowout on our hands.  Head Coach Bob Stoops isn’t going to take his foot off of the gas, he’ll want everyone to know Oklahoma deserves to be in the BCS title game.  Sooners win 56-21.
