Week 6 College Football Picks

Written October 8, 2009 by Rock Henderson

Nebraska at Missouri- The Cornhuskers have a two year running score of 93-23 hanging over their heads from their last two meetings with Missouri. Nebraska’s running game is good enough to keep the Tiger offense off the field and Blaine Gabbert won’t have all day to throw against Big Red’s defensive line. Play: Nebraska -3.5

Michigan State at Illinois- Favorite play of the weekend here. Illinois is changing quarterbacks and backup Eddie McGee is experienced. The Spartans are coming off an emotional win over rival Michigan and now have to hit the road against a desperate team. Play: Illinois +4

Purdue at Minnesota- Will stay in the Big 10 here. Purdue raced to a 21-3 lead against Northwestern before allowing 24 unanswered points in a loss. Minnesota has played the tougher schedule and features the best player on the field in WR Eric Decker. Throw in the home field advantage and I am all over the Golden Gophers. Play: Minnesota -3.5

Iowa State at Kansas- Always tough to swallow when you lose a game because of a blocked extra point but Iowa State will try to bounce back in Lawrence this weekend. Todd Reesing and the Jayhawks should put up a big number on offense against a weak Iowa State defense. Play: Kansas -20

Alabama at Mississippi- Classic SEC showdown and Alabama’s first real test in conference. Ole Miss has to get more production out of Jevan Snead as the Crimson Tide defense is one of the best in the nation. Oxford is not an easy place to play, but Alabama has a lot of experience on this team and should be able to handle the atmosphere. Play: Alabama -5

Houston at Mississippi State- Interesting line movement in this game as the public is pounding the Bulldogs after Houston was blitzed by UTEP last week. Dan Mullen has done a nice job turning the offense around at MSU, but their defense is still giving up way too many points. Houston’s aerial assault can score on anyone, but they struggle to get stops. Take the home team here. Play: Mississippi State -1.5

Stanford at Oregon State- Could be a preview of the team that will step forward and challenge USC for the Pac 10 crown. The Cardinal have been impressive early on, but have done most of their damage at home with a true freshman quarterback. Corvallis, OR puts opposing teams to sleep and RB Jacquizz Rodgers is running wild. Play: Oregon State -1.5

Georgia at Tennessee- Georgia had LSU on the ropes before their defense folded at the end of the game. Both teams have a ton of holes and Tennessee’s start at the most important position with Jonathan Crompton at quarterback. Not sure why the Vols continue to get love at home against teams more talented than them? Play: Georgia +2

Auburn at Arkansas- If you are looking for a ton of offense tune into this game on Saturday morning. Auburn has used its quirky offense to run off five straight wins including a nice win at Tennessee. The Hogs feature a pro-style offense under Bobby Petrino that QB Ryan Mallet has thrived in. Play: Auburn -2.5

Michigan at Iowa- If Iowa can contain Michigan QB Tate Forcier they will walk in this game. If he gets out of the pocket, the Wolverines are fully capable of hitting big plays on Iowa’s conservative defense. The Hawkeyes balanced offense should be able to pick its poison against a Michigan D that has given up a bunch of points the past few weeks. Play: Michigan +8
