Week 14 College Football Power Rankings
Written November 25, 2008 by Jack Jones
Florida is the best team in the power rankings right now because they’ve looked like the best team in the nation for several weeks. Alabama is still undefeated, this is true, but are you telling me that the Gators won’t be favored in the SEC Championship game against the Crimson Tide? I didn’t think so. Some of the competition the Gators have been blowing away isn’t all that great, but Alabama has played several of those same teams and haven’t walked away with as impressive of victories. This week the Gators are 17 point favorites over Florida State.
This week Oklahoma jumps up to #2. Let’s not get in a whole debate about how Texas beat Oklahoma but Texas Tech beat Texas, who Oklahoma just beat, and so on. The rankings are based on the most recent play of all teams, and Oklahoma has looked every bit as good as Florida over the past few weeks. Last week’s win over Texas Tech proved the Sooners are really hitting their stride at the right time. Now they have to get past a very tough Oklahoma State team on the road to prove they really deserve a higher BCS ranking than Texas, and therefore a spot in the Big 12 Championship game.
Alabama is the only undefeated team in a BCS conference and they should get their due, but don’t look past the fact that many of Alabama’s opponents have not turned out to be as good as they were supposed to be (Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, and LSU come to mind). The fact of the matter is that style points matter and Alabama simply isn’t earning any lately.

It’s hard to believe Texas could be put at number four in our college football power rankings, but, alas, this is what it’s come to. Texas really hasn’t done anything to hurt their status, they just haven’t had the high-profile games, or any games, for that matter as they were on a bye while Oklahoma dismantled Texas Tech on a huge national stage last week. Through no fault of their own, Texas has managed to become somewhat of an after-thought, but they are still very much in the BCS Championship picture. You can bet your bottom dollar everyone in Texas will be an Oklahoma State fan this week, hoping the Cowboys put up enough of a fight against Oklahoma to keep the Sooners behind Texas in the BCS rankings. The Longhorns beat the Sooners earlier in the year, but, what have they done for us lately?
USC comes in 5th in our power rankings this week, even though they may miss out on the Pac-10 title and their spot in the Rose Bowl because of an early season loss to Oregon State. The Trojans are still very dangerous, though. They might have the best defense in the nation, though it’s hard to tell against some of the lackluster competition they’ve faced for the better part of the season. USC’s offense, however, is inconsistent. When it’s good, it’s really good, but when it’s bad it makes them extremely vulnerable, especially if they were playing, say, any of the four teams ranked ahead of them. The Trojans still have amazing talent all over the field, though, and could contend with any of the big four under the right circumstances. USC is a 30 point favorite against Notre Dame this week.
