College Football Power Rankings – Week 15
Written December 2, 2008 by Jack Jones
The Florida Gators produced another impressive performance last week over state rival Florida State. The Gators won 45-15 and didn’t really show any signs of vulnerability. This week they’ll have one of their toughest opponents to date in the SEC Championship against the BCS #1 Alabama. Florida walks into the game as 10 point favorites over the Crimson Tide.
Oklahoma beat Oklahoma State handily enough (61-41) to jump Texas in the BCS rankings and earn a spot in the Big 12 Championship game. The Sooners have posted scores of 58 points or more in 5 straight games now. All Oklahoma has to do this week is get past Missouri in the Big 12 Championship and they’ll be on their way to the BCS title game to play the winner of the SEC Championship between Florida and Alabama.
Arguments for the Texas Longhorns to be ranked above the Sooners in the BCS rankings are well-founded. Texas has remained dominant, plus they beat Oklahoma in a head to head match up. Unfortunately, the Longhorns lost to Texas Tech, however, and that blow to their BCS ranking was simply too much to overcome. Oklahoma has looked like the better team at this point in the season. It’s really too bad we can’t get a Oklahoma versus Texas rematch in the Big 12 Championship game. That would settle this whole dispute about who deserves a shot at the national title. Texas’s next game will likely be in the Fiesta Bowl. Their most likely opponent? The Ohio State Buckeyes.
#1 in the BCS is #4 in the power rankings. Alabama has impressed with their 12-0 record this season including a dominant 36-0 performance over Auburn last week. The problem with Bama is that they still don’t have that many impressive wins this season. Georgia looked like a big win, but the Bulldogs haven’t turned out to be the caliber of team we had expected. After Georgia you’d have to say that Ole Miss is their best win. Mississippi has put together an impressive season that includes a win over Florida. When you look at the schedules of the 3 teams rated above the Crimson Tide, I don’t think you can make the argument that they’ve had a very difficult road to their undefeated regular season.
The USC Trojans beat Notre Dame 38-3 last week. Big deal, right? They are a win over UCLA away from another Pac-10 title. The Pac-10 is terrible, right? The fact is that the Trojans have been winning and doing it in dominant fashion all season. You can’t say that their wins over Ohio State, Oregon, Arizona, and California mean nothing. They did have their customary one loss, this year to Oregon State, but you’d be hard pressed to find a defense that has been as dominating as the Trojans. They’ve now held 7 opponents to 7 points or less, including 3 shutouts. No matter what conference you are in, those are impressive numbers. This week the Trojans are 30 point favorites over UCLA.
The rest of the pack: #6 Texas Tech, #7 Penn State, #8 Ohio State, #9 Utah, #10 Oklahoma State
