College Football Spreads – California vs. Washington

Written December 5, 2009 by Hector Garza

The Golden Bears (8-3) take to the road as they travel to take on lowly Washington (4-7) this Saturday at Husky Stadium.  This Pac-10 matchup is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm et and our college football odds have California, ranked 19th,  as the 6.5 point favorites, with the total set at 58.  A win this week will help position them for a better bowl game, and their bye week has given them extra time to prepare after coming off an upset 34-28 win against Stanford 2 weeks ago.  It’s quite a change from weeks 4-5 where they lost back to back contests by a combined score of 6-72.  The Huskies, meanwhile, are riding a one game win streak of their own, defeating Washington State 30-0.  Overall Washington leads the series 46-38-4, but their opponents have enjoyed the recent success, winning six of the last seven.

California crushed this team last year 48-7, and will attempt to do the same behind a strong rushing offense that’s gaining 184.2 ypg.  Jahvid Best is likely out due to a recent concussion, but has a team high 867 yards and twelve td’s.  There will be no let up by his replacement, as Shane Vereen has 738 yards, ten scores and boasts a 5 ypc average.   QB Kevin Riley has added another 16 td’s in the air on 2421 yards, and has helped the offense to an over 400 ypg average in a tough Pac-1o.  The Golden Bears secondary did a good job last week against Stanford, holding them to 157 total yards, but on the year have struggled giving up 257 ypg.   To counter the generous amount of yardage, the unit boasts 24 sacks and 20 takeaways on the season.   Betting college football is easy especially when Bodog is offering a $100 Match Bonus!

After beating USC in week three, Washington has had a rough go winning only two of their following eight games.  Their offense has scored 28 td’s, and Jake Locker can account for most of them.  As the team’s play caller he’s thrown for 18 scores and 2552 yards, while rushing for another five and 311 yards.   Last week against a weak WSU squad, he went for 290 total yards and two td’s, running for 94 and throwing for another 196.  Chris Polk joins him in the backfield as the first freshman running back to overcome the 1,000 yard barrier.  On the year he’s amassed 1019 and four rushing scores.  On the other side of the ball the defense has allowed 32 td’s, giving up 398 ypg and 28.2 ppg in the process.  On the year they’ve been susceptible to the run where opponents average 155 ypg.  Against Washington State they had success, but with Cal coming into town it could be rough going.

Not sure where to go for winning college football picks?  Betfirms has the know on all the great college football predictions.  On paper Cal should be able to pull out the win, but they’ve been inconsistent with their play thus far.  Washington has enjoyed the role of spoiler, where they’ve already upset powerhouses USC and Arizona.  The Golden Bears will have their hands full, but look for them to get the job done despite being in a hostile environment.
