College Football Top 25 Recap Week 7

Written October 20, 2009 by Black Widow

We give you a complete recap of Week 7 college football in terms of the Top 25 teams. This was a very entertaining weekend, especially in the Top-7. Six of the seven games in the Top-7 were decided by 8 points or less, with the lone exception being Alabama over South Carolina 20-6 which was also a very close ball game. NCAA football odds are posted for Week 8 coming up, so starting betting on college football today to beat the books to the punch!

#1 Florida defeats Arkansas 23-20 - It wasn’t until 9 seconds left when Caleb Sturgis kicked the game-winning field goal that the Gators had this one wrapped up. Sturgis was the star of the show with three field goals, including a 51-yarder in the third period. Arkansas hung tough, but their field goal kicker miss a pair of kicks that cost the Razorbacks the game.

#2 Alabama defeats South Carolina 20-6 - The Crimson Tide overcame 4 turnovers and 113 penalty yards as their defense stepped up big once again. Offensively, RB Mark Ingram carried the load by setting a career-high with 246 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

#3 Texas defeats Oklahoma 16-13 - The Longhorns just found a way to win by playing bend-but-don’t-break defense. They intercepted QB Landry Jones twice in the fourth quarter to seal the victory after Landry came in for the injured Sam Bradford. These teams combined for 228 penalty yards and 8 turnovers in a very ugly game.

#19 Georgia Tech defeats #4 Virginia Tech 28-23 - QB Josh Nesbitt only completed 1 pass in the entire game, but he rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets took an early lead and never looked back.

#5 Boise State defeats Tulsa 28-21 - The Broncos gave up two trick plays for touchdowns which kept this one a lot closer then it should have been. Their defense needed a stop in the final minute as Tulsa was marching for the game-tying score and they came through. TE Tommy Gallarda caught two touchdown passes from QB Kellen Moore, which was a surprise considering he had only 2 grabs all season coming in.

#6 USC defeats Notre Dame 34-27 - The Trojans took a 34-14 lead in the fourth quarter, but Notre Dame rallied and had a chance to tie on the game’s final snap from around the 5-yard line. Jimmy Clausen’s pass fell incomplete, and Matt Barkley stole the show for USC by throwing for a career-high 380 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Purdue defeats #7 Ohio State 26-18 - The Boilermakers’ defense forced Terrelle Pryor into several mistakes as Ohio State’s offense committed 5 turnovers and gained only 66 yards on the ground. Purdue recorded 24 first downs to the Buckeyes’ 12 to really dominate this game.

#8 Cincinnati defeats South Florida 34-17 - Starting QB Tony Pike went out with a wrist injury, but the Bulls were not ready for backup Zach Collaros who rushed for two touchdowns in the second half to preserve the win. He rushed for 132 yards on the game in limited action.

#9 Miami defeats UCF 27-7 - QB Jacory Harris was efficient once again, completing 20-of-26 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown.

#11 Iowa defeats Wisconsin 20-10 - After falling behind 0-10 early, the Hawkeyes reeled off 20 unanswered points including 17 in the second half to grab a stranglehold on this one. Both teams had troubles moving the ball on the ground, but it was Iowa’s defense that made the different. Amari Spievey intercepted Scott Tolzien twice.

#12 TCU defeats Colorado State 44-6 - The Horned Frogs have one of the best defenses in the country again this season, and that showed Saturday as they held the Rams to just 10 first downs and 182 total yards. Up next is BYU as TCU looks to remain unbeaten.

#14 Penn State defeats Minnesota 20-0 - This Nittany Lions defense was nasty, limiting the Gophers to 37 rushing yards and 138 yards of total offense. This makes 7 straight games that Penn State has held their opponents out of the end zone in the first half, a remarkable feat.

Texas Tech defeats #15 Nebraska 31-10 - The Red Raiders continue going under-the-radar this season. Despite starting QB Taylor Potts going down due to injury two weeks ago, backup QB Steven Sheffield hasn’t missed a beat. After throwing for 7 touchdowns against K-State last week, Sheffield completed 23-of-33 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown against this solid Nebraska defense.

#16 Oklahoma State defeats Missouri 33-17 - The Cowboys’ defense was the difference, holding Missouri scoreless in the second half. Dez Bryant was out with a suspension, but WR Hubert Anyiam filled his place admirably with 10 receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Colorado defeats #17 Kansas 34-30 - The Buffaloes came up with a big stop late to avoid blowing an early 24-3 lead over unbeaten Kansas. QB Tyler Hansen made his debut for Colorado, throwing for 175 yards and a touchdown as well as rushing for another score.

#18 BYU defeats San Diego State 38-28 - QB Max Hall was brilliant once again, throwing for 346 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for another score on the ground.

#23 Houston defeats Tulane 44-16 - The Cougars pulled away in the third quarter by outscoring the Green Wave 20-0. Case Keenum threw for 334 yards in the win, the 19th time he has topped the 300-yard mark in his brilliant career at Houston.

#24 Utah defeats UNLV 35-15 - The Utes did most of their damage in the second quarter, scoring 21 points to take a commanding lead. Terrance Cain account for three touchdowns, throwing for 2 and rushing for 1 in the victory.
