Colorado 2009 Football Predictions

Written June 23, 2009 by InfoPlays

Colorado-2009-Football-PredictionsThis is now year four for the coaching staff, and it’s time for the offense to start producing better numbers after ranking in the bottom third of the league in each of the past three seasons. The defense could struggle early with a brand new line, so it’s even more important for the offense to be prolific. This team has to win its home games and steal a couple on the road to reach a bowl game in 2009. The NCAA football odds show the Buffaloes listed at +1500 to win the Big 12 Title this season.

Offense: The shotgun spread, no-huddle offense from last year will remain in the arsenal, but the Colorado Buffaloes will return to huddling most of the time on offense in 2009. They will shuttle players in and out depending on play calls and personnel groupings. It is the second year in the row the coaching staff will be making major scheme changes on offense, but it seems to be the wise move. The strength of the team is not its passing game, but its running backs, offensive line and tight ends.

The Buffs may be the only team in the Big 12 trying to run it down their opponent’s throat week in and week out, while mixing in some well-timed, play-action passes. Colorado has four tailbacks capable of shouldering the load. Darrell Scott will likely be the starter after coming in as the nation’s No. 1 recruit in 2008 at running back. Rodney Steward, Demetrius Sumler and Brian Lockridge should split the rest of the carries. All four are capable of catching the ball out of the backfield as well.

Defense: The Buffaloes lost six of their top 10 tacklers from 2008, a team that led the Big 12 in pass defense and ranked fourth in total defense. The biggest losses are on the defensive line where Colorado will be breaking in three new starters. They are hoping to get contributions from at least two of the four defensive linemen signed in the 2009 recruiting class. The most likely force will be Nick Kasa, who was one of the top five defensive ends in the nation in the 2009 class. This defense showed the 3-4 look the most in the spring, and they are two deep at all four linebacker positions.

The two leading tacklers from last season in Jeff Smart and Shaun Mohler, are playing the same weak side position this year, while Marcus Burton moves back to the middle. Outside linebackers B.J. Beatty and Douglas Rippy have the size, speed and athleticism that has everyone in the program excited. The secondary has depth with sophomores Patrick Mahnke and Anthony Perkins getting enough playing time last season that there won’t be a steep drop-off at safety. Senior corners Ben Burney and Cha’pelle Brown return this season, with Brown being one of the most experienced corners in the conference. Juniors Jimmy Smith and Jalil Brown have started to emerge as playmakers. Smith has all-conference potential.
