Colorado State 2009 Football Predictions

Written June 30, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Colorado State Football PredictionsSteve Fairchild did one hell of a job in getting the Colorado State Rams to a bowl game in his first year on the job. In 2008, the Rams finished with a 7-6 record after beating Fresno State, 40-35, in a very entertaining New Mexico Bowl. It’s always easier for a new staff in the second year, and Fairchild believes he has the foundation to return to CSU’s glory years. Still, it’s highly unlikely that the Rams can compete with the top three teams in the MWC in 2009. Check out the college football lines at one of our top sporstbooks this season! Offense: If you asked Fairchild last year whether or not his fifth-year senior starting quarterback, Billy Farris, would sign an NFL free agent deal in 2009, he probably would have laughed. Farris overcame Fairchild’s harsh spring assessment to steer the Rams to a bowl berth and their first winning season since 2003. It just so happens that Fairchild will have to rely on another fifth-year senior and first-time starter this season as well. Grant Stucker beat out junior college transfer Jon Eastman in the spring, though neither seemed to have fully gained Fairchild’s confidence. There are also two wild cards in the QB race. Incoming freshman Nico Ranieri gets his shot, and Klay Kubiak, son of Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, returns from offseason shoulder surgery.

The Rams will rely on their traditional power running style, helped by four returning starters on the offensive line that have combined for 125 starts in their careers. The running back position appears to be a committee approach heading into the fall. Junior John Mosure was the best running back in the spring, and he’s been versatile in the slot and in the backfield in the past. Whoever takes over at QB will have a deep receiving corps at their disposal. Senior Rashaun Green was a second-team All-MWC selection last season. Senior Dion Morton is the pure speed wideout, often used on reverses. Converted QB T.J. Borcky was the big surprise of the spring, and he’ll expand his role in the team’s Wildcat formation.

Defense: Defensive coordinator, Larry Kerr, brought toughness to this defense last year despite some rough patches. The linebackers made more tackles than the safeties, which couldn’t be said a few years ago. Sophomore Mychal Sisson, a MWC Freshman of the Year candidate in ‘08, will move to outside linebacker after two-year starter Ricky Brewer was suspended for the 2009 season. That’s a tough loss because Brewer still practiced with the team in the spring and was clearly their best defensive player.

The secondary suffered too many injuries to be effective a year ago, but they look to be solid this year, especially at safety. Free safety Elijah-Blu Smith was the hardest hitter in the spring, and he teams with strong safety Klint Kubiak, the oldest son of the Texans’ head coach. He’ll look to stay injury free in his senior season. While lacking the individual standouts from last season, the defensive line rotation should be solid with good, veteran depth this year.
