Common Poker Mistakes
January 24, 2008
All too often we see these common poker mistakes made by inexperienced players. If you want to take your game up to another level than not only will you learn by your own mishaps, but also by watching the other players at the table and learning from them as well. Bad players will never learn from their missteps and that is what separates the players that make it to the top from the ones that go bust. Another great thing about this article is that if you see other players making these mistakes, then you can exploit them and take them to the bank.
Here we go:
Mistake #1 - A player doesn’t bluff enough
If a player doesn’t bluff enough then when he bets or raises, you should give them credit for having a decent hand. If they check, then it’s time to bet and take the pot.
Mistake #2 - A player overvalues top pair
When you look at the average winning hands in Hold ‘em you will find that it is two pair, not top pair like many players believe. There are too many players who take risks when all they are holding is top pair. If you have a hand that can beat a player who overvalues his top pair, then over-bet the pot to put him in a position where most likely he will make a mistake. If you play small pocket pairs against these players then you can get a big payoff if you end up hitting your set.
Mistake #3 - A player under-bets the pot
If you are not betting enough to put pressure on the other players at the table, then they are going to stay in when they have drawing hands and they will draw out on you. After they call your small bet and hit, then they are going to make their big raise and take you down. If they don’t hit it then you let them off the hook for a small price.
Mistake #4 - Calling Too Much
If you are a calling station then the other players will make value bets, knowing that you are going to pay them off. Sure, you save some face by never being bluffed out of a pot, but you’ll end up a loser on the night and which is worse?
Mistake #5 - Tightening up in Tournaments
If you are in the middle stages of a tournament, or on the bubble of who gets paid or not, don’t tighten up waiting for a huge hand. The pros will play a lot looser against you and look to steal a large share of the blinds and antes.
You aren’t going to be able to play perfect poker, but you want to know how to make as few mistakes as possible. If you can recognize the flaws in your game, and those of your opponents, then you are going to be able to win more money at the poker tables.
