Connecticut at West Virginia Point Spread

The Connecticut Huskies are 4-2 on the season and have experienced a terrible off the field tragedy this past week. Defensive back Jasper Howard was stabbed to death on campus this week. He was not only one of the Huskies best players, but the heart and soul of their team. A truly sad story, one that should never need to be reported. Today though, a game is still being played and my job is to break it down to the very inch. Huskies quarterback Cody Andres has had a very up and down like season, his completion percentage is a solid 66%but has thrown for a mere 936 yards in six games with only four touchdown passes. Now, the ground game on the other hand has been tremendous. Starting RB Andre Dixon is a future NFL player, he has collected 616 rushing yards with 7 TDs averaging 5 yards per carry. Jordan Todman is no slouch himself, he has produced 502 rushing with 6 touchdowns and also has a 5 yard per carry average. They will face a very good Mountaineers defensive line, we shall see if they will be up to the task. Defensively, Uconn is above average. They give up 18 points per game and have a ton of depth. Head Coach Randy Edsall will have a dramatic task at hand to fulfill the talent and impact personality that Jasper Howard was. The Huskies will be playing with their hearts full Saturday afternoon, the intensity and emotion will overflow as they will dedicate this game to their fallen teammate. The x-factor for the road team will be their offensive line. If they are able to establish some holes for the great combo backs in Dixon and Todman, Uconn could most definitely win this game. A quick look at this weekend’s college football betting odds show West Virginia as 7.5 point favorites over the Huskies with an over/under placed at 47 points.

The Mountaineers are 5-1 on the season and just got catapulted back into the top 25 rankings. Today they will try and ease freshman quarterback Geno Smith into the mix as their starter Jarrett Brown will most likely miss this afternoons game due to a concussion he suffered last weekend when West Virginia faced Marshall. Smith though is more then capable of filling the void, he is athletic and has a great arm. What will make this transition even easier is the fact Noel Devine, one of the best players in the nation is the man who carries the ball. Devine has 734 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns so far this season averaging 6.4 yards per carry. He has spent this season torching opposing defenses. Number one wide receiver Jock Sanders has been inconsistent. Through six games he has totaled 433 receiving yards and two touchdowns. West Virginia is much more explosive. The overall statistical numbers are quite similar, the question is will the Mountaineers be able to run all over a Uconn team playing their first game after a teammates death? or will the numbers prove true leading Uconn to being very competitive? The xfactor for West Virginia will be the defensive front which has only allowed 80 rushing yards against per game. If they contain Uconn’s running backs then this game will be an easy winner for the home team.
