Cowboys at Saints NFL Odds
Written December 17, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
The Dallas Cowboys continue to bumble in the month of December. Last weekend they fell to the San Diego Chargers and their record fell to 8-5 on the year. On the other hand the New Orleans Saints are 13-0 and they are the toast of the town in New Orleans this year. They were expected to be better this season, but nothing like this was expected. The offense has been humming along and the defense is doing just enough to keep them winning. Can Dallas break their December jinx? The New Orleans Saints are one of only two unbeaten teams left, but there are now only 3 weeks left in the regular season. Not surprisingly at all, the Saints offense ranks first in the league in both total yards and points scored per game. At 35.8 points per game they are setting an amazing precedent considering the number of tough defenses in the NFL today. Drew Brees is the leader of the offense and he has been great this year. Brees has thrown for 3,832 yards and has a spectacular 70% completion percentage. Six players have at least 33 receptions this year, so the Saints definitely spread the ball around. Marques Colston is the big play receiver, but Robert Meachem has also emerged as a big play threat this season. The running game is also very solid with Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell, and Reggie Bush all running the football very effectively. The defense has been good for the year, but they have been a little suspect against the pass in the last three games, allowing more than 300 yards per game.
Dallas is getting to where they could be in trouble for the playoff race if they don’t get a big win here sometime soon. The December swoon once again has Cowboy fans calling for Wade Phillips job and wondering what is wrong with their team. Tony Romo’s numbers are actually quite impressive on the season. Romo has 22 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions and the offense averages 391 yards per game. Miles Austin is the big play receiver on the outside and Jason Witten is the go to guy in the middle for Tony Romo. The running backs are very good, with Barber, Jones, and Choice all getting solid playing time and proving their worth for this team. The offense ranks third in the NFL in total yards, but just 13th in points scored per game. Clearly turnovers in the red zone and settling for field goals have held this team back. The defense has been pretty good this year. They are allowing just 17.9 points per game, good for sixth best in the NFL.
The NFL point spreads for this weekend show New Orleans as a touchdown favorite over the visiting Cowboys. The posted total on this game is set at 53.5 points. If you are making NFL predictions this weekend remember that Dallas is 5-15-2 against the spread in their last 22 December games and the Saints are 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 home games.
The Saints defense has looked a little more suspect in recent weeks, but Dallas will have to score touchdowns and not kick field goals to beat this Saints team. Drew Brees and the Saints offense should do well against a defense without its best player (DeMarcus Ware). Unless the Cowboys really step up in this one I think the Saints make it 14-0.
