Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers: Baseball Odds & Predictions

Written April 12, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

cubs-brewers-preview-041209The Cubs will step onto the field for Sunday Night Baseball 3-2 in their first five games this year. They are fresh off Alfonso Soriano’s 9th inning go ahead two run homer off Carlos Villanueva of the Brew Crew which gave them a 6-5 victory last night. The Cubbies are one of those teams that just always seem to have the same nucleus with the same expectations every year. Soriano, Aramis and Derek Lee once again is the Trio that will look to lead the favorite’s to win NL Central. A big part to this teams success will be second year Japanese all-star Kosuke Fukudome. The one free agent signing that could have an impact on Chicago’s success is Milton Bradley. Tonight, the Cubs will send pitcher Ryan Dempster to the mound. When Dempster See’s the Brewers on the schedule he jumps up for joy with extreme excitement. Perhaps the reason for that is last year he went 4-0 in 5 starts against the Crew with a 2.4 ERA adding 28 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched. These two teams do not like each other very much, Dempster knows Milwaukee will be anxious for this seasons first Sunday Night game. The key player(s) for the Cubs tonight will be their bullpen. Heilman, Gregg and Marmol have been spotty to say the least. In order for the Cubs to be victorious tonight, they must get good bullpen production.  The MLB Odds for this game show the Cubs at -126 over Milwaukee.

The Brewers have gone 2-3 in their first five games this season. After Villaneuva blew last nights game, it should have made the Milwaukee realize in today’s game, a Closer is very much necessary as they count down the days until newly acquired free agent Trevor Hoffman returns.. The Brew Crew return the exact same lineup as last year. They are led by their two superstars Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. Against Dempster, a pitcher in which this lineup has struggled so drastically, the key will be for lead off man Ricky Weeks to get on base and get him out of his comfort zone. If Milwaukee expects to win tonight, their starter, Jeff Suppan must pitch a whole lot better then he did in his first start when he got tattooed for 6 runs over only four innings of work. Last season Suppan went 1-1 in three starts against the Cubs with a 6.60 ERA. This game does not look to fair well for the Brewers as all signs point in the opponents direction. These two teams do not like each other very much. Fielder, Braun and Hart vs Soriano, Aramis and Lee. Sunday Night Baseball at its best. Picks Below.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Cubs are 8-3 in their last 11 Sunday games. Chicago is also 24-11 in their last 35 road games. The Brewers are 5-16 in their last 21 games as an underdog. The Cubs are 7-3 in their last 10 games when these two teams have met. Dempster vs Suppan is way to one sided in the Cubs favor. The rubber game of this series will go to the defending NL central champs.

Documented MLB Record:

8-3 OVERALL

2-1 BEST BEST

Nice call on the cubbies, I wish I would have seen this in the morning when I saw your other play on the A’s.

    Gary,

I am sorry you missed out on this one. In reference to the A’s pick, unfortunately they couldnt muster up a couple of runs for Cahill who pitched superbly just as I expected. The plays for Monday are very strong my friend, lets get ready to ring up that register.
