MLB Picks: Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers

Written May 9, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

cubs-brewers-preview-050909Oh boy, Aaron Heilman does it again. Randy Wells and Angel Guzman combined for seven innings of one run ball to give way for Heilman in the eighth. With the blink of an eye Ryan Braun homers and the Cubs come away with a 3-2 victory. Last nights tough loss drops the Cubs one game behind the Crew in the win column. Alfonso Soriano leads the team with nine home runs and 17 RBIs. Chicago has been a well balanced offense so far. The pitching staff overall has been decent. Some signs of dominance and a few slow starts. Ryan Dempster is tonight’s starter. Through his first six starts he is 2-1 with a 4.86 ERA. He pitched at Milwaukee back on April 12th when he went six innings allowing four runs on six hits. Dempster picked up the victory in that game. Last season was a break out year for him as he had a record of 17-6. He started five games verse the Brewers which was more then he did against any other team. In those starts he went 4-0 with a 2.40 ERA. The Brew Crew only hit .213 against him as a team. The numbers don’t lie and the Cubs offense is potent enough to count on. Most teams would lay an egg after last nights debacle. This is a contending team though, expect a big performance from Dempster. The key factor hitting wise will be Mike Fontenot as Aramis is out for 4-6 weeks.

The Brewers are 17-13 on the season and are led by one of baseballs best Ryan Braun. On the season Braun is hitting .330 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs. Prince Fielder is hitting .280 with five homers and 24 RBIs while Mike Cameron has showed some rare power producing six home runs and 18 RBIs. Bill Hall, Corey Hart and J.J. Hardy have given this team good production as well. I have the Brew Crew down as one of my National League World Series Contenders this season. Their pitching has been better then last year as well. Tonight they send Yovani Gallardo to the mound. Through his first six starts he is 3-1 with a 3.02 ERA. Coming off another major injury last year Milwaukee’s organization has high hopes for Gallardo and rightfully so. His stuff is electric. The question that will always linger in peoples minds is will he stay healthy? That I am unsure, what I do know if he is healthy tonight and what a showdown this will be against the Cubbies and Ryan Dempster. Expect this game to be filled with adrenaline as these are two bitter rivals.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Cubs are 6-2 in their last eight Saturday games. The Brewers are 7-2 in their last nine home games. Milwaukee is 9-3 in their last 12 games following a win. In the head to head match ups these teams couldn’t be more even. Over the past 10 games they are 5-5 against one another. Tonight you got two pitching studs going face to face. The home team is favored here slightly. Without Aramis Ramirez the game is looked at differently. We got a small play on the game line and a larger play on the O/U.

Saturday’s Baseball Lines show Milwaukee Brewers -142/Chicago Cubs +132 & O/U 8.5 Runs

Jordan’s Picks: Brewers -142 & UNDER 8.5 Runs

Now I call last night starting the weekend in style. The Marlins BEST BET was just as i said, LOCK CITY. An 8-3 win as Hanley had another monster game. Nolasco settled down after the first two innings and pitched very well. That line at +104 was hysterical, so I did the only thing reasonable, exploited it. We then went on to ride The Nation for another win. Boston’s home field dominance continued. Focus, motivation and will along with of course knowledge are a must. I possess the quad pack. Now lets get back to work.

Documented MLB Record:

43-22 OVERALL

17-8 BEST BET
