Dallas Cowboys 2008 NFL Draft Needs

The Cowboys fell short again in 2007, as they lost in the playoffs to eventual Super Bowl Champions the New York Giants. The Cowboys made sure that T Flozell Adams and S Ken Hamlin would return to the team in 2008, as they re-signed Adams and stuck the franchise tag on Hamlin. The Cowboys have signed veteran pro bowl linebacker Zach Thomas to help out the defense. So what do the Cowboys need to get this team to the Super Bowl in 2008? It could all start in the NFL draft. While there is talks that owner Jerry Jones wants to make a trade with a team at the top of the draft so he can get RB Darren McFadden from Arkansas, they would be much smarter in keeping their two first round picks (22nd and 28th) and not only getting a solid RB but also helping out the team elsewhere. So lets take a look at what the Cowboys might do with their two first round picks, given that they don’t trade them for McFadden.

1. Running Back

It’s quite obvious that the team is parting ways with Julius Jones and wants to land a premier running back in this year’s draft. While McFadden would be a great fit on any team, I think he is being a little over hyped because of how good Adrian Peterson did last year. The Cowboys still have Marion Barber and the two back system seems to be working. Felix Jones looks like he would be on the board for both of their picks, and would be a great fit in Dallas. Jones was McFadden’s back up at Arkansas, but showed signs that he can do it on his own if needed.

2. Cornerback

The team could look to land a cornerback with one of their top two picks, as the draft is pretty top heavy with solid corners this year. There are at least six that are worth first round picks and the Cowboys should be able to land one of them if they want to. While the team has quality starters in Anthony Henry and Terence Newman, both were seldom seen on the field together because of injuries. Jacques Reeves was a solid 3rd corner, but got beat too many times when he was forced to play one-on-one. The team could have shots at Oklahoma’s Reggie Smith, Tennessee State’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and possibly Troy’s Leodis McKelvin.

3. Wide Receiver

While team is set with Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton, there is talk that Terry Glenn might not be coming back for 2008. Owens is starting to get up there in age and the team could use a quality young playmaker to help out QB Tony Romo and company. This draft has some quality wide outs and the Cowboys could grab one of the best with their first pick. The likes of Michigan’s Mario Manningham, Texas’s Linas Sweed, and Michigan State’s Devin Thomas among many others could still be on the board.

4. Safety

Though this isn’t a glaring weakness the team could look to add some young talent here in later rounds to help the future. They will still have starters FS Hamlin and SS Roy Williams. The draft isn’t very deep with safeties, so if they Cowboys look this way we expect them to go for a safety that also has the ability to be a return specialist or special teams.

5. Quarterback

While Tony Romo will likely be the man for many years to come, the team could look for a backup if the right guy comes along to them. They currently have Brad Johnson as the #2 QB, but he is going to be 40 and won’t be around much longer.
