2011 Dallas Cowboys Schedule
Written by Steve Janus
The Dallas Cowboys come into the 2011-12 NFL season off a miserable 6-10 season a year ago. Many thought the Cowboys were going to be become the first team to play at home in the Super Bowl, but they didn’t even sniff the playoffs. Head coach Wade Phillips was fired after a 1-7 start, opening the door for Jason Garrett to take over. Garrett led the Cowboys to a 5-3 finish, and it now falls on his shoulders to get this team back on top the NFC East. The Cowboys also went out and added defensive coordinator Roby Ryan to sure up a defensive unit that really struggled last year.
To get an idea of how the Cowboys will do in this upcoming season, let’s take a look at their schedule for the 2011-12 season. Outside of the six division games against the Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants, Dallas will face off against the NFC West, AFC East, Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The NFC East has been one of the toughest division in the NFL for quite some time, and while the Cowboys and Redskins finished with a mediocre 6-10 record, the entire division has the potential to make the postseason this year. The Cowboys went 3-3 against their division rivals last season, and will have to repeat or improve on that mark if they want to take over the top spot.
The Cowboys should be able to bolster their record against the NFC West, where a 7-9 team won the division last year. Dallas lucks out by getting both the Seattle Seahawks and St Louis Rams at home, and should go into each of these games as the favorite to win.
The four games against the AFC East figures to bring a much bigger challenge, especially considering the fact that they have to play on the road against the New York JetsĀ and New England Patriots. Both of those games come in the first six weeks of the season, so we should get a good feel for how far this team has come right off the bat. Home games against the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills are must wins for Dallas to have a legit shot at making the postseason.
Normally when you finish third in your division, you get a couple of pretty favorable matchups against the other teams in your conference who finished in the same spot in their division, but both games against the Detroit Lions and @Tampa Bay Buccanneers figure to be a tough matchup for Dallas. The Cowboys beat the Lions 35-19 at home last year, but this is a young team that could be ready for break out year. The Buccaneers are another young team that appear to be on the verge of becoming one of the top teams in the league after their surprising 10-6 finish to last season.
