Denver Broncos at Washington Redskins NFL Odds

Written November 15, 2009 by Black Widow

The Denver Broncos meet up with the Washington Redskins Sunday in what will be a battle between two teams headed in opposite directions. The Broncos have been one of the biggest surprises in the league, opening the season 6-0 before losing their last two against the Ravens and Steelers. Meanwhile, the Redskins have been one of the biggest disappointments, starting 2-6 despite spending a ton of money in free-agency, most notably the $100-million they spent on Albert Haynesworth. NFL odds show the Broncos -3.5 over the Redskins with a Total Set of 36.5 points Sunday.

A lot of the excitement in Denver is gone after back-to-back blowout losses to Baltimore and Pittsburgh, but those setbacks cannot take away from what this team has accomplished midway through the season. The Broncos are still in great shape to win the AFC West, leading the Chargers by a full game. During their winning streak, the Broncos averaged 22.2 points/game while allowing 11.0 points/game. But they’ve been outscored 58-17 in their last two contests, and Kyle Orton is making mistakes that he wasn’t making to start the year. He threw for just 152 yards against Baltimore, and followed up that poor performance with 3 interceptions against the Steelers on Monday. He had a 9-to-1 touchdown to interception ratio through the first 6 games. Denver also needs to get their running game going again. Correll Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno have combined for just 82 yards on 32 carries the last two weeks, which is disappointing after the Broncos averaged 133 rushing yards/game during their winning streak.

The Redskins are also struggling defensively right now, giving up 27 points to the Eagles and then 31 points to the Falcons in back-to-back losses. They allowed 181 rushing yards to Michael Turner and company last week, so Denver will have a chance to get their running game back on track against this recently “soft” defense. But as bad as their defense has been of late, it doesn’t even compare to their offensive woes. The Redskins have yet to top 17 points in a game this season, and QB Jason Campbell has been sacked 25 times behind an injury-plagued offensive line. Denver’s defense ranks third in the league with 26 sacks, so he will likely be facing a lot of pressure again Sunday. Also hurting Washington is that Clinton Portis is doubtful to play this week after suffering a concussion in their 17-31 loss to Atlanta last Sunday.
