Denver Broncos vs Cincinnati Bengals Betting Lines
Written September 10, 2009 by InfoPlays
The Denver Broncos hit the road in Week 1 Sunday to take on the Cincinnati Bengals. There are some interesting storylines heading into this AFC clash. The Broncos will be without Jay Cutler this season, and they almost lost Brandon Marshall but he’s back on the practice field and should get the start Sunday. Cincinnati welcomes back Carson Palmer this season after he missed the final 12 games last year due to injury. He tweaked his ankle in their first preseason game, forcing him out of action for the rest of the preseason. But he’ll get the start Sunday in hopes of leading the Bengals back to the playoffs after back-to-back lackluster seasons. Right now, NFL odds have listed the Bengals -4 over the Broncos with a Total Set of 42.5 points.
The Denver Broncos start the season with a new head coach and a new QB under center. Josh McDaniels takes over for two-time Super Bowl champion coach Mike Shanahan and Kyle Orton replaces Jay Cutler at quarterback. Orton suffered a cut on his finger in the preseason, but he is expected to play with his dislocated index finger. If he can’t go, then veteran backup Chris Simms will get the nod. Denver’s biggest problem last season was their defense, where the Broncos allowed 146.1 rushing yards and 228.5 passing yards/game last year. They are switching to an attacking 3-4 defense this season which should take some pressure off of a secondary that recorded just six interceptions last season, which was only better than Detroit’s four. The defense will have to step up, because if the preseason was any indication, this Denver offense has a long way to go before they can get back to scoring at the same rate they did a year ago. The defense was a big reason for the Broncos’ monumental collapse last season where they lost their final three games to finish 8-8 and lose out to the Chargers in the AFC West, needing only one win to clinch the division.

Palmer’s moderate high ankle sprain is the biggest concern in Cincinnati right now. This team is primed to turn the corner and get back to winning football as long as Palmer can stay on the field. Prior to going down to injury last season, Palmer passed for more than 4,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. He also connected for 54 touchdowns with 33 interceptions. This offense goes as Palmer goes. Chad OchoCinco has re-committed himself to being one of the best receivers in the league. He suffered his worst season since 2001 last year, catching 53 balls for 540 yards and four touchdowns. The Bengals feel they have found a running game they can rely on behind Cedric Benson to take some pressure off the passing game. Benson rushed for 747 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games with Cincinnati last year after signing with the Bengals following his release from the Bears. Cincinnati registered just six rushing touchdowns in 2008, tying Cleveland for the fewest in the league. What goes unnoticed is the defensive improvement in Cincinnati, where the Bengals allowed just 6.3 points/game in their final three games last season, all Bengals’ victories. It was the one bright spot in a 4-11-1 season from a year ago.
