Detroit Lions vs New Orleans Saints Odds

Written September 11, 2009 by InfoPlays

Detroit Lions vs New Orleans Saints OddsThe Detroit Lions vs. New Orleans Saints game this weekend is a rematch from a 42-7 rout by the Saints in Detroit last season. QB Drew Brees threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns passes, both to Marques Colston. That game was over by halftime, and apparently the linesmakers feel another blowout could be in store in 2009. That’s evident with the NFL betting odds showing Detroit -13 over New Orleans with a Total Set of 49 points.

New Orleans lost too many close games last season, and that was the reason for an 8-8 record and no playoff berth for the Saints in 2008. Despite having the league’s most prolific offense last season, the Saints just couldn’t get it done in the close games, losing five times by 3 points or fewer. This Brees-led offense put up 29.8 points/game and 411 yards/game last season. After a breakout season in 2006 with a trip to the NFC Championship game, the Saints have suffered back-to-back disappointing campaigns. Players feel they were a much better team than their record indicated last year, but as Bill Parcells says, you are only as good as your record. It was a tale of two seasons from Brees last year on his way to throwing for 5,069 yards, only the second QB in the history of the league to reach the 5,000-yard plateau. Brees threw 13 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in the 8 losses, compared to 21 TD’s and 3 INT’s in Saints’ victories. The defense is led by middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma, and the stop unit needs to make a huge improvement if the Saints are to win the NFC South this season.

Rookie QB Matthew Stafford gets the start Sunday, and it won’t be the ideal atmosphere for the No. 1 overall pick. These are hungry Saints’ fans, yearning for a winner. After finishing 0-16 last year, the Detroit Lions made several changes as expected. They brought in rookie head coach Jim Schwartz and first-year general manager Martin Mayhew in hopes of resurrecting this franchise. Schwartz had served as the defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans the last eight years, so he’ll put his stamp on this defense that allowed 42 points to New Orleans last season. Bringing in linebackers Julian Peterson and Larry Foote in the offseason gives the defense two proven leaders. Calvin Johnson has emerged as one of the best wide receivers in the game, and he’ll provide a nice security blanket to bail out Stafford when he gets in trouble this season. Johnson tied for the league lead with 12 touchdowns grabs last year, and finishing fifth among wide receivers with 1,331 yards. Kevin Smith was the one bright spot in the loss to the Saints last year, rushing for 111 yards and their only touchdown. Smith finished last season with 671 yards and four touchdowns in Detroit’s final eight games of ‘08. He is expected to have a big sophomore season.
