Detroit Tigers Release Gary Sheffield
Written March 31, 2009 by Jack Jones
With the baseball betting season just around the corner one thing is for certain, Gary Sheffield will not be suiting up in a Detroit Tigers uniform. Detroit released the nine-time All-Star despite the fact that he has 499 career home runs, and could have become only the 25th player in history to reach the 500 homer mark. Surely another team will pick up Sheffield, who had a disappointing run with the Tigers. He signed a two-year, $28 million extension after coming over from the New York Yankees in a trade for prospects, but he was injured during most of his stay with the Tigers.
The reason for the move seems to be the addition of Josh Anderson from Atlanta. With the addition of another outfielder Detroit had to make a tough decision on what to do with their roster before heading to Toronto to open up their 2009 season against the Blue Jays. Sheffield is 40 years old and has struggled in spring training, hitting just .178 in 18 games. Last year Sheffield played in just 114 games due to a bad shoulder and other injuries and batted only .225. Back in 2007 he was on the field for just 133 games and only managed a .265 average.
Sheffield thought this season was going to be on the up and up after not having to have surgery in the off-season for the first time since 2001. Family members had made arrangements to make the Tigers opening series in the hopes of seeing Sheff hit career home run no. 500. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Barry Bonds, Frank Robinson, and Reggie Jackson are the only other players in baseball history with as many home runs as Sheffield plus 2500 hits, 1500 RBIs and 200 stolen bases. The career .292 hitter also has 1,633 RBIs, which puts him 27th on the all-time list. He has made All-Star teams while playing for San Diego, Florida, the Dodgers, Atlanta, and the Yankees.
