MLB Betting Odds & Picks: Diamondbacks vs Giants
Written August 26, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
Another disappointing night for Arizona in which has been a very bad season for the boys from the desert. Down 5-2 headed into the top of 9th inning yesterday they rallied to close the gap to 5-4 before falling short on a Chad Tracy ground out. The Diamondbacks are 2-8 in their last 10 games overall and 20-25 against NL West opponents this season. Justin Upton is sidelined with an oblique injury, Eric Byrnes and Conor Jackson are out for the season while Mark Reynolds is doubtful with an illness. So, in simple terms, this team is a mess.. On the mound tonight is veteran Doug Davis who is 7-11 on the season with a respectable 3.77 ERA. Since the break Davis is 3-2 in seven starts with a 4.81 ERA. In three starts against the Giants he has went 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA, San Francisco has hit .333 off him in those starts combined. When Miguel Montero and Chad Tracy are your teams 3-4 power punch then you have one heck of a problem. This lineup has no power, minimal speed and they do not hit for a good average. Doug Davis has not had much success against the Giants this season and since the break he has been shaky at best. In order for this lineup to score runs they will need to get base runners on often as their power is horrid. Look for Davis to pick decently tonight, whether or not it will be enough is a different story. Tuesday’s baseball odds have the Giants as -140 money line favorites over the Diamondbacks, with the over/under set for 7.5 runs.
The San Francisco Giants are 68-58 on the season and currently trail the Rockies in the NL wild card race by four games. They held on to a 5-4 win last night off the bat of Travis Ishikawa who cranked a three run homer in the bottom of the 8th inning. With Colorado beating the Dodgers yesterday this was a very important game for them to not loose more ground. With the trades they have made acquiring Ryan Garko and Freddy Sanchez, this lineup is now more balanced. Pablo Sandoval is the Giants best player with out a shadow of a doubt as he has posted 19 home runs and 73 RBIs while hitting .331 this season to date. A key player down the stretch will be Aaron Rowand, if he can get his swing going consistently this team will have a real shot. The Giants send Jonathan Sanchez to the mound for the second game of this series. He is 6-10 with a 4.30 ERA this season. Most noted for pitching a no hitter earlier in the season, Sanchez looks to continue improving here against the Dbacks. In nine starts at home this season he is 4-2 with a 3.61 ERA. Since the all-star break Sanchez is 3-2 with 3.54 ERA in seven starts. What really excites me though is this stat line. In two starts and one combined relief appearance against Arizona this season, he is 1-1 with a 0.68 ERA this season holding them to a .133 batting average. Expect a great outing from the youngster tonight as eight innings of one run baseball is certainly a possibility. The x-factor from the plate will be Aaron Rowand.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Arizona Diamondbacks are 1-10 in their last 11 road games. The San Francisco Giants are 2-7 in their last nine games against NL West opponents. The UNDER is 8-2-1 in the last 11 meetings between the two while the Giants have won seven of the last 10 games against Arizona. Like I stated above, I see Sanchez pitching very well against an injury plagued Dbacks lineup that is terrible. I do expect Doug Davis to perform better then he has of late but not nearly good enough to win tonight. Final Score Prediction: San Francisco 5 Arizona 1.
