Baseball Picks: Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres
Written June 8, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Arizona Diamondbacks are 25-32 on the season and have been playing much better ball as of late. Justin Upton is an all-star lock with 11 home runs, 34 RBIs while also hitting .320 from the plate. He is also a great fielder. One of the more underrated players in all of baseball is Mark Reynolds. So far this year he leads his team with 14 homers and 36 RBIs. Arizona has also got a big boost from Rookie Gerrardo Parra. Tonight’s starter is the wild card Jon Garland. He brings a 4-5 record along with a 5.34 ERA to the mound. However, if you know Garland like I do then you should be well aware he could go six strong innings as easily as he could be knocked out by the third. As i broke down the stats I saw a lot of things will work in his favor tonight. Garland is 4-3 during night games as opposed to 0-2 during day games. He has a 8.71 ERA at home while his ERA on the road is 2.01. In his only start against San Diego this year he went seven innings allowing only three hits and no runs. The question people will ask is whether or not that 18th inning marathon will effect their play. I don’t see that being a problem. The MLB odds show the Padres -168 over Arizona with the over/under set at 7.5 runs.
As the Padres sit at 26-30, they are well aware they have over achieved. They have gotten early season MVP numbers from Adrian Gonzalez who has 22 home runs and 43 RBIs. The only reason that RBI number isn’t 15 more is due to the fact nobody ever gets on base in front of him. There is not one other batter to be worried about on this team. On the mound tonight is Jake Peavy. The proclaimed ace, is 5-6 with a 4.10 ERA. He was ready to be dealt to the Chi Sox but rejected the trade. He is also coming off an injury that plagued him in a recent start he had. Very simple break down for San Diego as if the combination of Peavy and their bullpen gives up four or more runs they will lose. Picks below.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Dbacks have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games. The padres are 3-7 in their last 10 games. In the head to head area the teams have split the last eight games 4-4. In my eyes i see a 50/50 game here with the better hitting team being the Dbacks as they are also playing better of late. The odds here look great and I am all over it. STRONG play on the UNDERDOG.
Jordan’s Pick: Diamondbacks +158
Another BEST BET hit as we have no started a three game winning streak. The Nats handled Maine with ease on Saturday like I stated along with Lannan pitching great. We missed coming away with a push by one run but still a good profit as the best bet was hit again.
