Disappointing MLB Teams To Start 2009 Season

Written May 12, 2009 by Jack Jones

Disappointing 2009 MLB teamsWe are only about 20% of the way through the young baseball season, but for some teams it seems like the start of the season has dragged on.  These clubs have been burning cash for those taking them on the baseball odds and breaking fans hard by underacheiving in comparison to early season goals.  Also, if your sportsbook has been underacheiving and you are looking for a change try Superbook, who has 50% signup bonuses going on right now alone with dime lines all summer long.

Arizona Diamondbacks (13-20) -This team has been done in by their poor hitting to start the season.  The Diamondbacks are the worst in the league in batting average and rank next to last in runs scored.  Three players who they were expecting to get decent numbers from (Chris Young, Eric Byrnes, and Connor Jackson) have all failed to get past the Mendoza line through the middle of May.

It doesn’t help the team that Brandon Webb is on the disabled list.  Webb started off the 2008 campaign at 9-0, but only got through one start in 2009 before heading to the DL.  His replacement was Yusmeiro Petit, who has helped Arizona go 0-5 in each of his starts.  All of this led to the firing of manager Bob Melvin, who was replaced by AJ Hinch.  Hinch should appear to turn things around in the upcoming weeks as the team has a soft schedule that sees them face the Reds, Braves, Marlins, A’s, Padres, and Braves.

New York Yankees (15-16) -All of that big spending in the offseason and not a lot to show for it in the early goings of 2009.  Injuries have hampered both the offense and the pitching staff.  Offensively, not having Alex Rodriguez the first month and a half to the season left a big hole in the lineup.  Mark Teixeira was brough in for big money but has hit under .200 to start the season.  Jorge Posada has seen time on the DL as well.

The pitching staff has woes of their own as the Yankees are next to last in the American League in ERA.  The bullpen has been horrible, partially due to both Damaso Marte and Brian Bruney missing time.  Chien-Ming Wang got off to a horrible start and was placed on the disabled list, but who knows if he is even going to return to form.  CC Sabathia was off to a poor April, but that is pretty typical for the left-hander so I’m not too worried about him.  This team needs to turn things around fast since they are playing in the toughest division in all of baseball.

Cleveland Indians (12-21) – Another team that is having issues effectively getting people out and getting runners across the plate.  On offense it is nice to see that Victor Martinez has bounced back from a horrible 2008 campaign to be lights out to start this year off.  What is the deal with the rest of the lineup though?  Travis Hafner is hurt yet again and Grady Sizemore, Johnny Peralta, and Mark DeRosa are all hitting under .240.

The pitching staff is getting solid production out of Cliff Lee again, who has a 1.70 ERA in his last five starts, but he has to be getting drained with the team winning just one of those five outings.  The bullpen has gotten rocked so far, blowing seven saves and throwing too many innings.  The Indians have the worst ERA in the American League, and things better start turning around fast for this team or they won’t be able to catch up in the competitive AL Central.
