NFL Betting Lines: Miami Dolphins at New Jork Jets
Written October 30, 2009 by Rock Henderson
AFC East rivals the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets will hook up for the second time in less than a month in a key game for both squads in the Meadowlands. The Wildcat was out in full force in Miami when both Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams ran wild on the punishing Jets defense. New York head coach Rex Ryan has a great defensive mind and don’t be surprised if he makes the necessary adjustments to slow down the Dolphin running attack. The Jets are listed as a 3.5 point favorite according to our latest NFL spreads, with a total set at 40.5.
Miami’s 2-4 record can be a bit deceiving as they have played better than their record indicates. They had the undefeated Saints on the ropes at home last Sunday, but blew a huge second half lead and ultimately were defeated. Second year QB Chad Henne was thrust into the spotlight after veteran Chad Pennington went down with a season ending injury. Henne hasn’t been spectacular in his time under center, but the Dolphins haven’t asked him to be. This team is built around innovation and the running attack. Ronnie Brown leads the team in rushing with 491 yards and seven touchdowns. He has flourished from the Wildcat formation and has even shown the capability to thrown from the shotgun formation. Ricky Williams forms the second half of the two headed monster and has gained 391 yards from scrimmage and scored five times, including three scores against New Orleans. Miami will have to address having just four touchdown passes in six games at some point. Many think that the Wildcat is a fad, but this is the second year that the Dolphins have built their offense around it and defenses are still perplexed on how to exactly stop it.
One week rookie QB Mark Sanchez is throwing five interceptions in a loss to the Buffalo Bills at home and the next he is eating a hot dog on the sidelines after leading the Jets to a 38-0 blowout of the Raiders. Take away the five pick game and Sanchez has played fairly well in his rookie year. He has thrown for 1178 yards and six touchdowns, but has to increase the completion percentage. RB Thomas Jones is having a Pro Bowl type year as he has ran for over 600 yards and averaged almost 5 ypc. The Jets might have found a diamond in the rough with third round draft pick Shonn Greene. After not seeing much action in the first six games, Greene broke out for 144 yards and two scores. With versatile back Leon Washington lost for the season, Greene should see much more action the rest of the way. The jury is still out on the acquisition of WR Braylon Edwards, but he does present a threat down field if opposing defenses over play the run. New York’s defense got back on track after a few lackluster performances and hopes to carry that momentum into the second half of the season. Dolphin quarterback Chad Henne has benefited from playing every game that he started on home turf. He is going to be in for a rude awakening Sunday against a fired up Jets team. Don’t expect the Jets D to make the same mistakes they did in the first meeting. Mark Sanchez will minimize the mistakes for a second game in a row and rely on the strong run game to get his team to 5-3. Play: Jets -3
