Doyle Brunson

There isn’t anyone in poker who enjoys a more legendary status than Doyle Brunson. He is now 73 years of age and is still going strong in his 31st World Series of Poker main event. In the world of poker his name rings out just like Babe Ruth in baseball, Michael Jordan in the NBA, and Arnold Palmer in golf. I just can’t imagine anyone else coming along that becomes bigger than this guy.

If there is anything that we should be thankful for, it’s the buzz that Doyle Brunson created around Texas Hold’em. You used to only see this game being played in back rooms of bars by a lot of rough people. Now, you see Hold’em on major television networks being played by celebrities, stars, and high ranking executives.

In the old days he used to play in Texas, but it didn’t take long before he moved to Las Vegas and started playing high stakes games in the hotels. He won a record 10 World Series of Poker events, including back-to-back world championships which will probably never happen again. It was the Super System that he produced with some fellow professionals that really brought poker to the world. Who can count the number of professional players that got their start with that piece of work.

It was back in the 1950s and 60s that Doyle and his Texas Rounders went around the state of Texas cleaning out other poker players with their high-stakes games. There were plenty of times that he had to outrun both the law and would be highjackers who were seeking out the big money from the illegal card games. Then came the realization that Las Vegas was the place to be. There was a constant supply of new fish coming to the casinos, they had large wallets, and wanted to sit down with a big name to try and beat the best. Plus he didn’t have to run from the law or thieves!

Then in 1978 Doyle produced the book that is know deemed the bible of poker. The Super/System of Poker is a guide to all the major games and is the top-selling work of all time in the poker genre. Even today this book sells over 14,000 copies per month as people look to increase their poker knowledge.
There isn’t another player in the world who is more willing to play big money No Limit Texas Hold’em games. If you are going to sit at his table then you better have at least $100,000 to get a seat. The pots in his games will be upwards of $50,000 so let’s hope you have the stones to take a big hit and not press.
