Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers Week 6 NFL Picks
Written October 12, 2008 by Brad Marchetti

The Philadelphia Eagles want to show that they can finish ballgames after two straight disappointing losses. The Philadelphia Eagles vs San Francisco 49ers is a match-up between two strong NFC contenders seeking momentum. The 49ers Mike Martz air max offense has produced results ranking 16th in the NFL after last year’s last place finish. Philadelphia’s Andy Reid has a fine team, but the Eagles must prove that they can put the talent into good use. Philly QB Donovan McNabb is more mobile and is playing at a high-level again. The perpetually injured All-Pro RB Brian Westbrook is even more delicate than ever. The NFL betting odds for the Philadelphia Eagles vs San Francisco 49ers game is Philadelphia -5 point SPREAD.
The 49ers offense is built for TD’s against defenses that blitz. The Philadelphia Eagles will be bringing the house to 49ers QB J.T Sullivan. Sullivan has been inconsistent his last two games, forcing the 49ers to have to air the ball out from behind. All-Pro San Francisco RB Frank Gore (4.8 YPC 4 TD) will need to see more touches. Philadelphia has an above-average run defense, but Gore (4.50 40-speed) is an excellent back with great leadership. O’ Sullivan (82.2 passer rating) will have to be extra sharp with his passes against a talented Eagles secondary. The Eagles secondary is aided by a fierce pass-rush that has accumulated 18.0 sacks. Philly DE Trent Cole (2.0 Sacks) could overmatch 49ers tackle Joe Staley in this one. If the running game gets stuffed, look for J.T O’Sullivan to look for his main target WR Issac Bruce (14 Rec 275 Yds 4 TD). O’Sullivan is an accurate passer that has good mobility. The Eagles linebackers are young, and suspect in coverage. Look for O’Sullivan to try and nail Bruce on crossing patterns and get TE Vernon Davis (4.40 40-speed) involved.. The 49ers O-line has allowed a high 20.0 sacks in 140 pass attempts, but the run game has dominated with 4.6 yards per carry. The NFL betting odds OVERUNDER is at 42.5 points in the Philadelphia Eagles vs San Francisco 49ers game.
Philadelphia RB Brian Westbrook is officially out with broken ribs leaving the Philly offense without a full deck on offense. Westbrook’s replacements, Correll Buckhalter (3.8 YPC) and Lorenzo Booker (2.3 YPC) are not nearly as explosive as Westbrook. The Eagles leader QB Donovan McNabb has been unhappy with his teams play: “I was embarrassed these last two weeks, I mean, to two teams we shouldn’t have lost to. When you make mistakes and you don’t capitalize on opportunities, things like this happen. … You find yourself here wondering why.” Brian Westbrook also commented on the Eagles disappointing 2-3 start: “It’s going to be tough for us, but we’re going to continue to fight, We’re not going to quit”. The Eagles WR core does have an explosive element with DeSean Jackson (4.35 40-speed). Jackson will look to attack a slow 49ers secondary that is allowing a 75.1 passer rating. The 49ers have swarmed with good pressure on the QB recording 13.0 sacks. The run defense however, has been a sore spot, ranked 23rd in the NFL and struggling to win in the trenches. 6′1″ 240 MLB Patrick Willis (4.45 40-speed) has been a sideline-to-sideline force, but hard-hitting SS Michael Lewis has been banged up. DE Justin Smith along with Lewis will be counted on to get McNabb out of the pocket on blitzes and stunts.
If J.T Sullivan can avoid fumbles and turnovers, the 49ers offense could catch the Eagles aggressive D with some sucker punches. The Eagles have plenty of firepower now with KRWR DeSean Jackson that could be the difference against the 49ers struggling secondary. The NFL betting odds for the Philadelphia Eagles vs San Francisco 49ers game is Philadelphia -210 MONEYLINE.
