Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants NFL Betting Odds & Spread
Written January 8, 2009 by Jason Lowry

This Sunday the No.1 seeded New York Giants will take on the Philadelphia Eagles for the 3rd time this season, as the two teams split in the regular season, with each team winning on the road. The Giants took home the NFC East crown going 12-4, and even with the loss of a number of stars from last years Super Bowl team, including Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora, and Plaxico Burress, but this team just keeps on winning. The Eagles snuck into the playoffs, as a number of teams lost, and last week they used a 10 point 4th quarter to take home a 26-14 win over the Vikings on the road in the wild card round. For those of you looking to do a little NFL betting on the game this weekend, the oddsmakers have the Giants 4 point favorites over the Eagles at BetUS.com.
The Eagles are a scary team heading into the playoffs, as you just never know what you are going to get from this unit, as they can come out and light up the scoreboard, and then they can struggle to score like they did against the Redskins in week 16 where they scored just 3 points. Against the Vikings last week it was a lot of Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook, as McNabb threw for 300 yards and a touchdown, while Westbrook had 121 total yards including a 71 yard catch and run from McNabb for a score in the 4th quarter with the score just 16-14. The key for the Eagles in this one is Westbrook, who had 203 yards and 2 scores when the Eagles beat the Giants, and just 59 total yards when the Eagles fell to the Giants.
The Eagles defense was solid against the Vikings last week, as Minnesota scored just 2 touchdowns, both in the 2nd quarter. The big concern heading into the game was shutting down Adrian Peterson, and though Peterson had 83 yards and 2 scores on 20 carries, they did a great job against him in the 2nd half when it mattered most. The Eagles also made life pretty miserable for quarterback Tavaris Jackson, who just 164 yards with an interception. It was also a tale of two stories for the Eagles defense, as in the loss to the Giants they let Eli Manning throw for 2 scores, while the Giants amassed over 200 yards on the ground, but in the Eagles win, they held Manning to just 123 yards and a score, and the Giants only ran for 88 yards. Bet Philadelphia Eagles +4 at BetUS.com.
The Giants definitely come into this game with confidence after their amazing run through the playoffs last season, and its all about the rushing attack of Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, and Ahmad Bradshaw. Jacobs and Ward both ran for over 1,000 yards this season, but Jacobs was a force running for 15 touchdowns. Eli Manning doesn’t have many weapons on the outside with Burress off the team, and it will be up to guys like Domenik Hixon, Amani Toomer, and Kevin Boss to step up and lead this team to a victory. There is no secret what the Giants need to win this game, and that is they have to be able to run the football, or it’s going to be real hard for this unit to move the ball on a solid Eagles defense.
The Giants can still win this football game with its defense, and if they do they will need a big game out of Justin Tuck, who had just 1sack against the Giants this season. The Giants are great against the run, and though stopping Westbrook on the ground is a start, they have to make sure McNabb doesn’t find the versatile back out of the back field, as he is just as dangerous after the catch. McNabb did have some success against this unit throwing 4 touchdowns to just 1 interceptions. The Giants are known for getting pressure on the quarterback, but the only sack they got was the one Tuck recorded in the 2nd matchup. Bet New York Giants -4 at BetUS.com.
Lowry’s Lean on the Game: Giants -4
I had a tough time picking the winner in this one, but when it come down to it, I just can’t pass on a Giants team that can run the football like they do. I know the Eagles have Westbrook, but if they can stop him they can pretty much stop the entire Eagles offense. I expect this one to be close, but I like the Giants to take control late.
Predicted Score: Giants 27 Eagles 21
