Eagles at Giants NFL Odds
Written December 11, 2009 by Rock Henderson
Two heated rivals will take the field with playoff implications on the line when the 7-5 New York Giants host the 8-4 Philadelphia Eagles. The NFC East has a real possibility of sending three teams to the postseason, but they could eliminate each other down the stretch with head-to-head match ups. New York got back to the winning side of things with a huge home win over Dallas. Two straight divisional wins will put them, at worst, one game out. Philly played impressive football at Atlanta last weekend and will look to keep the momentum going in the Meadowlands. The Eagles are a one point underdog according to our latest NFL betting odds.
Andy Reid has to be pleased that his Eagles are 8-4 and coming off a dominating win. The team has won three straight after an eight point loss at San Diego. Most of their success has came without versatile RB Brian Westbrook in the lineup due to a severe concussion. QB Donovan McNabb is a leader in the locker room and in turn has thrown for 2427 yards and 16 touchdowns with only six interceptions. McNabb usually catches the most heat in the City of Brotherly Love when the Eagles lose, but he continually shows why management would be crazy to let this guy go. Rookie LeSean McCoy has filled Westbrook’s shoes adequately the past few weeks. He has rushed for 530 yards and three touchdowns on the season. Expect the ex-Pitt Panther to play a large role down the stretch in this offense. Explosive WR DeSean Jackson missed last week’s game with a concussion of his own, but is probable against the G-men. Jackson is a game changer that is capable of taking a 5 yard slant and turning it into a 70 yard touchdown pass. Jeremy Maclin is a burner also as the Eagles have made a huge effort to increase the speed of their offensive talent. The defense is a stingy unit that is 7th in the league in yards allowed and 10th against the pass due to cornerbacks like Asante Samuel. Are the real Giants back finally? The media was quick to dismiss any notion that New York really isn’t that good this year, but a 26-6 loss at Denver brought up doubters once again. QB Eli Manning has been consistent this season, throwing for 2925 yards and 20 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He has blended nicely with their young receiver core that has stepped up since the departure of Plaxico Burress. The running game is still somewhat of an issue as bulldozing back Brandon Jacobs is averaging under 4 yards per carry. Jacobs did score twice and gain over 100 yards from scrimmage against Dallas, but needs to be more effective running between the tackles. Ahmad Bradshaw returned last week from injury and is a key cog in the Giants offensive machine. The two have combined for over 1300 yards and eight scores while splitting the carries for the most part. WR Steve Smith has quietly gone about his business and caught 78 passes for 979 yards. He is more of a possession receiver as the Giants are hoping that rookie Hakeem Nicks develops into a downfield threat. New York made some changes to the defense last week and put some highly noted players onto the second unit in order to stir things up. So far so good in that department.
It is fitting that this match up is virtually a pick em’ as there is a ton riding on this game for both teams. The Giants have been Jekyl n’ Hyde throughout the year, but you have to play them under a field goal here. A sprint to the finish will be on with Philly and New York being 8-5 after this weekend. Dallas could very well join them. The injuries for Philadelphia will finally play a role and the Giants are fairly healthy.
