Eagles vs Falcons NFL Odds
Written December 2, 2009 by Rock Henderson
Expect a playoff atmosphere in the Georgia Dome this Sunday when the 7-4 Eagles clash with the 6-5 Atlanta Falcons. Philly needed all four quarters to secure a win over division rival Washington last weekend to stay one game behind Dallas. The Falcons have been hit by the injury bug fairly hard this season as both Matt Ryan and Michael Turner missed most or part of the game against Tampa with injuries. The health of Ryan will be key in this match-up, while RB Jerious Norwood is capable of filling in for the explosive Turner. According to the NFL odds for this game, Atlanta is a 5.5 point underdog and the total is set for 44 points.
The Eagles don’t always win pretty, but they have found a way to place themselves in position for a playoff berth. QB Donovan McNabb missed some time earlier this season due to injury, but has put up good numbers since his return. He is completing over 61% of his passes and has tossed 15 touchdowns against just six interceptions. Philly needs versatile RB Brian Westbrook back to full strength in order to use him in their screen game and running the ball occasionally. Rookie LeSean McCoy has been a pleasant surprise for Eagle fans, rushing for a team high 528 yards and three touchdowns. FB Leonard Weaver has also been used to carry the ball in Westbrook’s absence. Two of the biggest reasons why Philadelphia’s offense can be very explosive at times is the speed they possess in the wide receiver position. DeSean Jackson is one of the most electrifying players in the league with the ball in his hands and strikes fear into opposing defenses. WR Jeremy Maclin has settled in as the team’s #2 and has caught 42 balls for 540 yards and four scores. One of Donovan McNabb’s favorite targets is TE Brent Celek as he has become one of the top pass catching tight ends in the league. Atlanta will most likely make or break their season in the next two weeks when they host the Eagles and Saints. QB Matt Ryan has been in a sophomore slump after setting the league on fire in his rookie year. He has thrown for 2,291 yards and 16 touchdowns, but has been mistake prone as his 12 interceptions ranks near the top of the league. When RB Michael Turner has been healthy he has been a load to handle. Nicknamed “The Burner”, Turner has ran for 864 yards and 10 touchdowns in roughly nine games played. Backup RB Jerious Norwood finally returned from a hip injury that sidelined him for much of the season and filled in adequately for Turner against the Bucs. WR Roddy White came through with the game winning touchdown catch last week and has been the top option in the Falcon passing attack. White has caught 56 balls for 770 yards and seven touchdowns. TE Tony Gonzalez has transitioned nicely to his new team, catching a team high 61 passes in which five have went for scores. The Falcons know that they are not going to catch the Saints, but if they win four of their last five Atlanta will be in a nice position to snag a wild card spot.
No Matt Ryan for sure now spells doom for the Falcons playoff chances. Michael Turner is nicked up and doubtful so the two biggest weapons for Atlanta will be watching from the sideline. Backup QB Chris Redman threw a game winning touchdown pass last week, but struggled up until that point. Philly is due for a huge road victory and it will come in the ATL.
