Eastern Michigan 2009 Football Predictions

Written July 27, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Eastern Michigan Football PredictionsDon’t expect any big steps taken for new head coach Ron English this season as he takes over a 3-9 team from a year ago that hasn’t won a conference championship in 22 years. The Eastern Michigan Eagles will try to build a solid defense as English was a former defensive coordinator at Michigan. That won’t happen in one season, but the offense could help the Eagles pull off some upsets while English tries to get things going on the other side of the ball. He’ll be looking to increase depth through his next recruiting class. NCAA football odds are now available to all bettors! Offense: Ron English knows it will be a tough rebuilding task, but he’ll have a fine quarterback in senior Andy Schmitt to help keep the team competitive. At 6-4, 238 pounds, Schmitt has the size and strength to hang in the pocket and shake off tacklers as his receivers get open. He’ll direct a pro-style offense and should have a prolific season under center. Remember, this is the guy who completed an NCAA record 58 passes for 516 yards and five touchdowns in a season-ending victory over MAC powerhouse Central Michigan. On the season, he completed 261 of 417 passes for 2,644 yards and 15 touchdowns a year ago. He can be a dual threat as well, rushing for 171 yards and five scores.

Senior running back Terrence Blevins should take some of the pressure off of Schmitt, rushing for 575 yards and 12 touchdowns last year. Backup Dwayne Priest added 474 yards and five scores and he’ll be a factor this season as well. Jacory Stone serves as the top returning receiver, catching 88 balls for 943 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. Tight end Josh LeDuc showed tremendous improvement in 2008, registering 32 catches for 446 yards and four touchdowns. The offensive line returns four starters, with the best of the bunch being center Eric Davis who has a good combination of athleticism and toughness. This offense returns eight starters in all and should carry the load this season to keep the team in ball games.

Defense: The Eagles’ defense can’t be expected to turn things around overnight after giving up 427 points and 35.6 points/game last season. English will be looking for this unit to get key stops in big moments, which could add two or three more wins by season’s end. Sophomore end Brad Ohrman had 42 tackles as a freshman, including 11 for loss and six sacks. He has a bright future and may be the best player on this side of the ball entering his sophomore season.

Defensive lineman Brandon Downs could be a factor with his quickness. He had 30 tackles with 2.5 coming for a loss, and he should improve in both areas this season. Jermaine Jenkins is the leader of the linebacking corps. He recorded 64 tackles last season, seven for a loss, along with two sacks and two interceptions. He moves well and hits hard, but he could certainly improve on his tackling. Safety Ryan Downard had 28 tackles with two interceptions and two passes defensed last year to lead the secondary.
