Eastern Michigan at Ohio State Odds

Written by -

This Saturday the No.2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes will host the Eastern Michigan Eagles in their final non-conference game of the season. The Buckeyes improved to 3-0 on the year with an easy 43-7 win over Ohio last week. The oddsmakers don’t seem to think the Buckeyes will have any trouble this weekend against Eastern Michigan, as the current odds have the Buckeyes 42.5-point favorites over the Eagles at home.

Eastern Michigan (0-3): After two close losses to start the 2010 season, the Eastern Michigan was no match for instate rival Central Michigan in their third game of the season, as the Chippewas beat up on the Eagles 52-14. After rushing for 285 yards against Army the previous week, the Eagles run game struggled to get things going against Central Michigan, as they finished with just 76 yards on the ground, 49 of those yards came from running back Dwayne Priest.

For the first time this season the Eagles got an extended look at redshirt freshman quarterback Devontae Payne, who split the snaps with starter Alex Gillett. Payne finished with 134 yards on 13 of 24 passing, while Gillett had 148 yards and a touchdown on 12 of 20 attempts. While neither quarterback threw an interception, Gillett did have a fumble that was returned 43 yards for a touchdown by Central Michigan. It will be interesting to see what approach head coach Rob English uses this weekend with his two quarterbacks against a very strong Ohio State defense.

Ohio State (3-0): After an impressive win over the Miami Hurricanes in week 2 of the season, the Buckeyes cruised to a win over Ohio last week. Quarterback Terrell Pryor added to his Heisman resume this past weekend, as he set a new school record with 16 straight completions against the Bobcats. Pryor finished the game with 235 yards and two touchdowns on 22 of 29 attempts, and added another 35 yards and a touchdown on the ground. While Pryor looked amazing at times, he did finish the game with two interceptions.

While the Buckeyes finished the game with 158 yards on the ground, the running game really struggled at times, as starter Brandon Saine led the team with just 48 yards on 12 carries. The Ohio State defense came to play on Saturday, as the forced Ohio into five turnovers, and allowed just seven first downs and 158 yards of total offense.

Looking at the Odds: Pretty easy to see why the oddsmakers are heavy on Ohio State this weekend, but picking these games with huge spreads is no easy task, and my initial reaction to this line, much like last weeks, is to avoid it if possible. However if I did have to place a bet on this game, my money would be on Ohio State. I feel like the Buckeyes have the offense and defense to pull off the rout, but I am a little concerned that Eastern Michigan could pull off the back door cover in garbage time late in the game. My final score prediction is Ohio State 55, Eastern Michigan 10.
