Ernie Els Odds to Win the 2008 Masters
Golf fans around the world are getting excited for the first major tournament set to get underway this weekend. The Masters is set to take place at its annual home at Augusta National. While winning a tournament throughout the year is impressive, nothing compares to winning a major tournament. The crowds will be lined up to watch the best players go at it, and today we are going to take a look at Ernie Els and his chance to take home the green jacket. We have taken some time to help you decide on if this is going to be the year Els takes home his first Masters victory. Here are our thoughts on why he will win, and why he might have to wait for another shot down the road.Ernie Els Odds to Win 2008 Masters 25/1 at Bodoglife.com
Why He Will Win:
Els is always a good bet for a solid weekend, as he is one of golf’s current best players. He is much better on the European Tour than the PGA Tour, but has already taken home a victory on the PGA Tour this year when he won the Honda Classic in the beginning of March. Els will come in well rested, as he has taken the two weeks leading up to the Masters, to conserve his strength and work on his game. While we mentioned the Els has yet to win at Augusta, he has had some solid showings. From 2000 to 2004 he had two runner-up finishes and never finished worse than 6th during that stretch. Els is pretty solid from tee to green, as he is solid with the driver, and one of the better putters when he hits the green in regulation. Els has the tools to win and will have to take advantage of every opportunity if he wants to beat the best and earn the coveted green jacket.
Why He Won’t Win:
Els just hasn’t been the same guy we came accustomed to over the years. While things started off with a bang when he won the Honda Classic, he has dropped dramatically since then, missing the cut at the PODS championship and finishing 75th at the CA Championship. While the driving and putter seem to be doing ok, he has really struggled finding the green in regulation on the PGA Tour. He currently is ranked 147th at 62%. Though he has a good past of Master runs, he failed to make the cut last year, and has not finished better than 27th since his 2nd place finish in 2004. We believe that he has a chance to win this week, but with odds at 25/1 you aren’t getting the risk vs. reward that you are looking for when you take a player who has struggled and will need a miraculous turnaround to win this week. So bet on him if you like, but we think there are much better golfers with better odds for your money to make the surprise win this weekend.
