After losing two out of the first three games in this series, the Detroit Tigers want a win in Game 4 to square it up. I’ll back them at an excellent price tonight with Doug Fister on the mound.

Fister has been dominant all season, and he deserves more respect from the books as a result. The right-hander is 5-1 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.180 WHIP through eight starts this season.

The Tigers are 37-15 in their last 52 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. Detroit is 5-0 in Fister’s last 5 starts with a total set of 9.0 to 10.5. Bet the Tigers Sunday.

A lot of horse bettors even indulge on exotic wagers like extactas, trifectas and superfectas. Did you know that there are actually more types of bets that can be placed at online sportsbooks. Well, Bovada Sportsbook is one that offers prop bets to customers.

Just like the NFL, college football, NBA, college basketball and the rest of the major sports, you can place prop bets on big horse races like the Preakness. In football you can wager on things like how many yards will a quarterback throw for, to which running back from either team will rush for the most yards. You can also wager on over/under point totals in basketball for individual players among many other prop bets.

I have listed some of the top Preakness prop bets at Bovada below. I’ll go through and give my opinion on each in case you want to indulge in this type of wagering.

Will Orb win the Triple Crown?

Yes +225

No -350

Answer: No – There hasn’t been a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed back in 1978. These days, some trainers don’t even want to race their horses in all three Triple Crown races due to the close proximity of each race. The risk of injury is huge, and with the value of a winning horse of a Triple Crown race being so big, it may not be worth the risk. Just look at last year when I’ll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, only to come up with an injury right before the Belmont. His owner and trainer decided not to race him in the Belmont because of it.

Will Orb win the Preakness Stakes

Yes -110

No -130

Answer: Yes – I have pegged Orb to win the Preakness Stakes in 2013. I also had him winning the Kentucky Derby. This is easily the best horse in the field, and that’s evident by the fact that he is a huge favorite at 10/11 odds to win. Sure, I believe that Governor Charlie and Goldencents will give him a run for his money, but I look for Orb to take the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans.

Will Orb Finish in the Top 3 at the Preakness Stakes

Yes -500

No +300

Answer: Yes – As stated before, I have Orb winning the Preakness Stakes. I have absolutely no doubt he’ll finish in the top three barring injury, therefore I believe it is worth the -500 price to bet Orb to find the board.

2013 Preakness Stakes – Margin of Victory

Over/Under 1.5 Lengths

Answer: Under 1.5 Lengths – This is the shortest of the three Triple Crown races, therefore I expect it to be more closely-contested than the other two. Orb won by 2 1/2 lengths in the Kentucky Derby, but I believe at least one horse in this field is strong enough to stay within 1 1/2 lengths of him at the finish line.

2013 Preakness Stakes – Winning Time

Over/Under 155:30

Answer: Over 155:30 – There is a 50% chance for rain on Saturday, which means there’s a good chance that there is a sloppy track at Pimlico Race Course. That would lead to a slower time for the winner. Even if it’s perfect conditions, this time of 155:30 is pretty strong, and I don’t believe any horse in this field can finish with a better time than that.

2013 Preakness Stakes – Head to Head Matchups

Orb -215

Departing +175

Answer: Orb – I obviously have Orb winning the Preakness, so I’m going to take him in every head-to-head matchup. This is my favorite of the head-to-heads listed because I believe that Departing is overrated. He didn’t run in the Kentucky Derby, and only three of the last 27 Preakness winners didn’t race in the Derby dating back to 1986.

2013 Preakness Stakes – Head to Head Matchups

Orb -210

Mylute +170

Answer: Orb – Mylute is getting a lot of respect due to his fifth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, which is was the second-best finish behind Orb of the six horses that will race in the Preakness that also ran in the Derby. However, Mylute was well behind Orb by the end of the race, and he isn’t even in the same class as the Derby winner.

2013 Preakness Stakes – Head to Head Matchups

Orb -400

Goldencents +300

Answer: Orb – This is my least favorite of these three head-to-head matchup bets. That’s because I believe Goldencents is going to run a strong race given the short, 1 3/16-mile distance of the Preakness. He is a front-runner who will try to win wire-to-wire, but I look for Orb to pass him down the closing stretch. However, I have pegged Goldencents to finish a strong third behind Orb and Governor Charlie.

Do you feel uncomfortable about placing your money down knowing that you don’t know enough about this race? I am going to give you a few tips to stick with when deciding on which horses to bet on in the 2013 Preakness Stakes. By following these guidelines, you should give yourself a better chance to win on Saturday, May 18th.

Don’t Bite on Longshots

Sure, the opportunity at turning a huge profit while only having to risk a little is tempting. And many times, a long shot goes on to win the Kentucky Derby. However, the Preakness Stakes is a completely different race. The highest paying winner ever in the Preakness was Master Derby in 1975 at 23/1. In fact, between 2000 and 2010 there was only one horse that paid better than 3/1 to win. That was Bernadini at 13/1 odds. In the Preakness, the smart money goes on the best horses in the field.

Stay Away from Front Runners

You need to start looking elsewhere if you are wanting to bet a horse that you think is going to lead wire-to-wire. From 1960 to 2012, there were just five horses that wired the field. In fact, since 1996, there has been just one horse to accomplish that feat. That was Rachel Alexandra in 2009. This is a long enough race that it still favors a good closer over a speed horse.

Only Bet on Horses That Ran in the Kentucky Derby

From 1986 to 2012 there have only been three out of 27 horses that went on to win the Preakness Stakes despite not racing in the Kentucky Derby. Also, one of those three was Rachel Alexandra in 2009, and she ran in the Kentucky Oaks the day before the Derby. Bernardini and Red Bullet were the other two. The best argument for why this is the case is the fact that the top owners and trainers in the country want to win the Kentucky Derby more than any other race. Therefore, they enter their best horses in the Run for the Roses.

Don’t Fall for Hometown Horses

Sure, it makes for a good story for a hometown horse to win in Maryland. Each year, there’s usually at least one Maryland-bred horse in the field to carry his hometown colors. However, Maryland is not known as a hotbed of thoroughbred breeding in this day in age. The last Maryland-bred horse to win the Preakness was Deputed Testamony all the way back in 1983.

Pedigree Matters

Figuring out which horses are bred for the 1 3/16-mile track at Pimlico Race Course is key. One huge thing to look for is a son of a former Preakness Stakes winner. Up until 2010 there had been nine sons of former Preakness winner who had gone on to win themselves. That’s a pretty big number in the grand scheme of things.

Superfecta: 9-7-6-4 $424.30

Pre-Race Odds/Payouts

The Preakness Stakes goes off this weekend at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. This is the second jewel of the Triple Crown and 2012 marks the 138th running of this prestigious event. With only nine horses set to run, this field looks more predictable than most of the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans in year’s past. Orb won the Kentucky Derby at 5/1 odds, and he is the heavy favorite to win the Preakness at 10/11 odds.

With a small field featuring only one big favorite, the chances of a big payout is very likely. If a longshot comes in, then your chances of cashing in big on an Exacta or a Trifecta go way up. These are two of the most popular wagers in horse racing. With an Exacta, you have to correctly predict which two horses will finish first and second in the exact order. A successful Trifecta wager would mean that you correctly picked the top three horses in the exact order.

Last year in the 2012 Preakness Stakes, a $2 Exacta paid $18.60, a $2 Trifecta netted bettors $$35.40, and a $2 Superfecta yielded $424.30. I’ll Have Another, Bodemeister and Creative Cause came in first, second and third, respectively. To keep it simple, I’m going to give you the payouts on every contender if they were to win at the current odds as of Friday, May 17.

Orb (10/11) – A $2 bet would net you $1.80 in profit. You would be paid back roughly $3.80.

Mylute (13/2) – A $2 bet would net you $13 in profit. You would be paid back roughly $15.00.

Departing (13/2) – A $2 bet would net you $13 in profit. You would be paid back roughly $15.00.

Goldencents (8/1) – A $2 bet would net you $16 in profit. You would be paid back roughly $18.00.

Governor Charlie (10/1) – A $2 bet would net you $20 in profit. You would be paid back roughly $22.00.

Itsmyluckyday (10/1) – A $2 bet would net you $20 in profit. You would be paid back roughly $22.00.

Will Take Charge (12/1) – A $2 bet would net you $24 in profit. You would be paid back roughly $26.00.

Oxbow (16/1) – A $2 bet would net you $32 in profit. You would be paid back roughly $34.00.

Titletown Five (28/1) – A $2 bet would net you $56 in profit. You would be paid back roughly $58.00.

This is one of the biggest races in the world for three year old horses and is also one of the longest running races in the history of the sport.

The Preakness has been run on Pimlico’s dirt track at different distances over the years, but has been run at 1-3/16 miles since 1925.

This year’s Preakness Stakes, the 138th running of the event, is scheduled for Saturday, May 18th. Coverage will begin on NBC at 4:30 EST, though the race won’t take place until closer to 6:30 EST.

Here you’ll find a complete list of every Preakness Stakes (as well as Triple Crown) winner throughout history.

Horse racing fans from around the United States are gearing up for the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes. The second leg of the Triple Crown will be held on Saturday, May 18 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. No horse has won the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.

After winning the Kentucky Derby, Orb will try and capture the second leg in the 2013 Preakness Stakes. He has been pegged the odds-on-favorite after his 2 1/2-length triumph at Churchill Downs. One of the biggest reasons Orb is such a heavy favorite is the fact that there will only be nine horses in the Preakness even though it’s allotted 14 contenders most years.

The position draw can play a big factor in how the race plays out. It was determined by a pill pull on Wednesday, May 15. A pill pull is a blind draw of numbered ping-pong-sized balls to determine which horse will be starting from which gate. This is obviously a much small field the 20-horse field that ran at the Kentucky Derby on May 4.

The No. 1 post, which Orb has drawn, is usually a tough one. That’s because it’s easy to get caught up in traffic as there’s not much room between the No. 1 horse and the rail. However, with Orb’s racing style, he shouldn’t have much trouble. He is a closer that likes to run from the back of the pack throughout the race before coming on strong down the stretch, which is precisely what he did in the Derby.

Also working in Orb’s favor is the fact that this is only a nine-horse field, so traffic shouldn’t be much of a problem for any of these contenders. Goldencents got a pretty good draw with the No. 2 position because he’s a speed horse. He is a front-runner that will have a clear path to the lead from this inside position. Now, he’s got to try to hold onto it, which he was unable to do in the Kentucky Derby. Here are the post positions for the 138th Preakness Stakes.

The Preakness Stakes is fast approaching and it’s a good time to start thinking about which horses you are going to place your bet/bets on this weekend.

If you are new to horse betting, it might be a good idea to stick to a simple bet until you get a grasp on how things work when it comes to placing your bets. For the more experienced bettors it might be a good idea to hit up a more complicated bet. Our favorite bets are Exactas and Trifectas simply because you can strike it rich while risking a small ammount. For your convenience, here is a quick look at some of the bets you can make on the Preakness Stakes this weekend.

Simple Bets

Win Bet – This is the easiest and the most common of bets. All you do is pick the winner at given odds, and you only win if the horse you pick comes in first.

Place Bet – This bet gives you a little extra insurance, as it allows the horse that you pick to finish the race either 1st or 2nd. Though your chances of winning are improved, the amount you can win drops. If you are torn between two horses this is usually a good and safe bet to make.

Show Bet – If you want to improve your chances even more of winning even more, than the show bet is what you’re looking for. You simply pick a horse and all it has to do is finish in the top 3 and you win. There is even incentive for the horse you pick to win, as you get more money the higher your horse finishes.

Complicated Bets

Quiniela – To make this bet you have to pick the two horses you think will finish first and second in either order. This is where things get a little harder as you are forced to find two horses instead of one.

Quiniela Box – This is a much easier bet as you can pick 3 horses and all that needs to happen for you to win is two of the three horses need to finish in the top 2.

Exacta – This bet is pretty much the same idea as the Quiniela, but you are required to pick the two horses that will finish 1st and 2nd in the exact order. It pays better than a Quiniela.

Exacta Box – Boxing horses together with an Exacta means that you just have to have the top two horses in any order. It costs more to Box them together, but also gives you a better chance of coming out with a winning wager.

Trifecta – Trifecta is the exact same thing as the Perfecta, except you are required to pick the exact 1-2-3 finish to the race.

Trifecta Box – This is a little easier than the normal Trifecta, as you pick three horses to finish in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in any order. This is a popular bet for your big time horse bettors, but we advise any new comers to stay away from this unless you have good knowledge of the horses racing.

Superfecta – To win this bet you really need to have some luck, as you have to pick the exact order of the first four horses to cross the finish line. Its hard enough to pick 1 or 2 horses to finish in order, picking 4 is a much harder task than you might think.

Some experts have been saying that the colt wasn’t bred for the 1 3/16 mile race, but he put to rest a lot of that by closing strong to win the Kentucky Derby.

He started toward the back of the pack in the Derby, but showed that he was the strongest horse in the field down the stretch as he closed hard for a 2 1/2-length victory. While many of the top contenders from the Derby won’t be running in the Preakness, this is still a pretty strong field with plenty of challengers for Orb.

Mylute and Oxbow figure to be contenders after strong finishes in the Derby. Mylute finished fifth, while Oxbow was just behind him in sixth place. Other Derby contenders that will be running in the Preakness include Will Take Charge, Itsmyluckyday and Goldencents. These three horses finished eighth, 15th and 17th in the Derby, respectively.

While Goldencents had the worst finish of the six horses entering the Preakness that ran in the Derby, he cannot be taken lightly. He is a speed horse that has thrived in shorter races throughout his racing career. Goldencents won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby with a 1 1/4-length victory, so the 1 3/16-mile Preakness figures to be right u his alley. Here is a look at all of the contenders that will hit the track at Pimlico Race Course this Saturday.

2013 Preakness Stakes Contenders & Odds

Orb (10/11) – Has won five races in a row after his victory in the Kentucky Derby. There’s no question that the public is going to be all over Orb come race day, likely making him an even bigger favorite.

Mylute (13/2) – Finished second-best of the six horses that raced in the Kentucky Derby that will also run in the Preakness. His fifth-place finish in the Derby makes him a big contender.

Departing (13/2) – With four victories and a third-place finish in five career starts, Departing will be one of the favorites to upset Orb in the Preakness.

Goldencents (8/1) – Won the Santa Anita Derby, but a disappointing 17th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby leaves a lot of question marks about this colt. However, he has the speed that suggests he’ll be competitive at Pimlico.

Governor Charlie (10/1) – One of the freshest colts in the field, Governor Charlie sat out the Kentucky Derby to target the Preakness. He has two wins in three career races, including a record-setting performance in the Sunland Derby.

Itsmyluckyday (10/1) – Registered five wins in 10 career starts before finishing a disappointing 15th in the Kentucky Derby.

Will Take Charge (12/1) – Won his final Derby prep race at the Rebel Stakes. Will Take Charge got caught up in traffic at the Derby and had to settle for eighth place, making him an intriguing value bet heading into the Preakness.

Oxbow (16/1) – This horse has posted several inconsistent performances throughout his racing career, which is why he is one of the long shots in the Preakness. Oxbow finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby.

Titletown Five (28/1) – Rebounded from a ninth-place finish in the Louisiana Derby for a fourth-place finish in the Derby Trial Stakes. This is clearly the worst horse in the field, which is why Titletown Five has been pegged the long shot.

Orb comes in as the 10/11 favorite after winning the Kentucky Derby. Six of these horses also ran in the Derby, so we can get a good gauge on about two-thirds of the field coming in. Here is a quick look at the nine horses that are headed to Pimlico this weekend.

Orb (10/11)

His win at the Kentucky Derby was his fifth straight victory overall. Orb passes 13 horses in the final half-mile to win the 139th Kentucky Derby by 2 1/2 lengths. He also won both the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth and the Grade 1 Florida Derby prior to his triumph at Churchill Downs.

Mylute (13/2)

Finishes second-best among the six horses in the Preakness field that also ran in the Kentucky Derby. Mylute took home a $60,000 payday for finishing a closing fifth in the Derby, finishing four lengths behind Orb. Had previously come up a neck short at the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby behind Derby third-place finisher Revolutionary.

Departing (13/2)

Won the Grade 3 Illinois Derby on April 20 by 3 1/4 lengths. That triumph punched Departing’s ticket to Baltimore. With only one loss in five lifetime starts, and fresh due to not racing in the Kentucky Derby, this horse is certainly worth a look. His only loss was a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby behind Revolutionary and Mylute, who ran third and fifth in the Kentucky Derby, respectively.

Goldencents (8/1)

Has finished in the top three in five of seven career starts. However, one of his misses was at the Kentucky Derby, where he was eased up late and crossed the wire in 17th place despite being one of the betting favorites. Goldencents’ best performance yet came in the race prior as he won the Santa Anita Derby by 1 1/4 lengths.

Governor Charlie (10/1)

There is a lot to like about Governor Charlie, especially since he’s fresh after not running in the Kentucky Derby. He won the Grade 3 Sunland Derby by five lengths in record fashion last time out on March 24. Governor Charlie ran the 1 1/8-mile Sunland Derby in 1:47:54, which proved to be the fastest time in stakes history.

Itsmyluckyday (10/1)

There’s not a lot to like about this horse after tiring through six furlongs at the Kentucky Derby to finish a disappointing 15th. However, it was the worse outing of his 11-race career, and a sloppy track could have been to blame. Itsmyluckyday has only missed the board three times, wwo of which came in the final two races of his 2-year-old season. He opened this year with a 6 3/4-length romp in the Gulstream Park Derby before winning the Grade 3 Holy Bull by two lengths.

Will Take Charge (12/1)

Ran in the middle of the pack in the Kentucky Derby before making a five-wide move with a quarter-mile left. He ran into traffic and wound up finishing eighth, just two spots behind stablemate Oxbow. Will Take Charge had beaten Oxbow by a head in their previous start at the Grade 2 Rebel.

Oxbow (16/1)

These are pretty good odds for a horse that finished in sixth place at the Kentucky Derby. He was within a half-length of leader Normandy Invasion with a quarter-mile to run before fading down the stretch. Oxbow has a win at the Grade 3 LeComte, a fourth-place finish by a half-length at the Grade 2 Risen Star, a second-place finish at the Grade 2 Rebel, and a disappointing fifth-place finish at the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby under his belt.

Titletown Five (28/1)

Winless in three starts in 2013, Titletown Five is the long shot for good reason. He has only one victory in seven career tries, which was a nine-length triumph over seven furlongs at Churchill Downs last October. He did run second at Saratoga behind future Grade 1 winner Violence, and finished a length ahead of Orb, who obviously won the Kentucky Derby.

It’s time for me to make my picks on which horses will win, place and show at the second leg of the Triple Crown. Orb won the Kentucky Derby with a late charge to win by 2 1/2 lengths. To no surprise, Orb is now the favorite to win the Preakness Stakes at 10/11 odds.

While Orb has a great shot at winning this Saturday at Pimlico Race Course, there have only been eight horses in the last 16 years who have won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. It happened last year with I’ll Have Another after previously occurring in 2008 with Big Brown.

Picking the winner of these Triple Crown races isn’t an easy task. Just six of the nine horses scheduled to race this Saturday participated in the Kentucky Derby, so don’t expect to see the same race we saw at Churchill Downs. Another thing that you have to keep in mind is the Preakness Stakes is 1/16 of a mile shorter than the Kentucky Derby. This race generally favors the speed horses rather than the closers.

A big reason that Orb is such a prohibitive favorite in the Preakness has to to more with which horses are not in this race rather than which ones that are. Key competitors like Normandy Invasion, Verrazano and Revolutionary will not run in the Preakness as their trainers focus on getting these horses ready for next month’s Belmont Stakes. Another is the fact that this will only be a nine-horse field as opposed to the usual 14.

I have used my horse racing knowledge to come up with my win, place and show picks for the 2013 Preakness Stakes. I believe that Orb is the best horse in the field, and that will show on Saturday. However, I look for Governor Charlie and Goldencents to represent the biggest threats to Orb’s quest for to become the first Triple Crown Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

My 2013 Preakness Stakes Picks

Win – Orb (10/11)

Place – Governor Charlie (10/1)

Show – Goldencents (8/1)
