Final Four Betting Preview: North Carolina Tar Heels

Written March 31, 2009 by Steve Janus

final-four-betting-preview-north-carolina-033109The Tar Heels are back in Final Four action for the second-straight year and their 18th Final Four overall, the all-time NCAA record.  They’ve also now won 100 NCAA tournament games as a program, also tops in NCAA history.

North Carolina has covered the spread in all four of their NCAA tournament games this season, starting with a first round destruction of Radford, 101-58, easily covering the 25 points they were giving, even without ACC player of the year, Ty Lawson.  UNC’s next two victims were LSU and Gonzaga, followed up with a 72-60 win/cover over the South Region’s #2 seed, the Oklahoma Sooners.  They’ve won all of their tourney games by double-digits and are the odds-on favorites to hoist the NCAA championship trophy when all is said an done.  You can bet on North Carolina with the #1 online sportsbook, BetUS.

In the regualar season this year, the Tar Heels battled with Duke for the best conference record with a 15-3 mark.  Due mostly to big spreads in their favor, UNC did not cover the number often and only hit back-to-back covers once, despite scoring over 100 points or more in eight games this season.  The Tar Heels entered the ACC Tournament as heavy favorites, of course, but failed to cover the spread against Virginia Tech, then losing as 9-point favorites to Florida State.

UNC is lead on the court by last year’s college basketball player of the year, Tyler Hansbrough, who averages just over 20 points per game.  He was, however, held in check against Oklahoma, scoring just 8 points.  Coming off of a foot/toe injury, Ty Lawson has really stepped up his game for the Heels, averaging around 20 points per game for the tournament, nearly 4 points more per game than his regular season average.  Lawson also leads his team in assists with 20 for the tournament, yet he has committed just 2 turnovers and grabbed 6 steals.  It’s safe to say that he has had an significant impact on the success of his team throughout the tournament.

North Carolina Heads to the Title Game If: Lawson stays healthy (which doesn’t appear to be much of a concern anymore) and Hansbrough stays out of foul trouble unlike his effort against Oklahoma.  North Carolina plays Villanova on Saturday, April 4th, in Detroit with tip set for 8:47 PM EST.  The Tar Heels are 7.5 point favorites.
