The Arkansas State Red Wolves host the Florida International Golden Panthers this week in the first Tuesday night college football game of the season. Both teams appear poised to make a run at a Sun Belt title, and this game will go a long way in determining that. The home team has won four straight in this series, with FIU topping the Red Wolves 31-24 as a 4.5-point favorite last season. This game will be nationally televised on ESPN 2 at 8:00 EST Tuesday.
The college football odds for Week 8 show us a line of Arkansas State -3 over Florida International.
Arkansas State
The Red Wolves have reeled off three straight victories and are peaking at the right time. Arkansas State (4-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) suffered their only losses of the season at Illinois 33-15 and at then-No. 13 Virginia Tech 26-7. They have picked up back-to-back road wins over Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Monroe. They beat the Warhawks 24-19 last weekend despite committing four turnovers, including three picks from QB Ryan Aplin. But they also forced four turnovers, and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.
Arkansas State ranks very well nationally in both offensive and defensive categories. The Red Wolves are 28th in total offense (444.2 yards/game), including 15th in passing offense (303.5 yards/game). They are 36th in total defense (344.8 yards/game), including 32nd in scoring defense (21.2 points/game). Aplin is completing 66.0 percent of his passes for 1,646 yards with six touchdowns and eight interceptions on the season.
Frankie Jackson is their leading rusher with 190 yards and three scores, while Aplin is second with 177 yards and a touchdown. Dwayne Frampton (47 receptions, 606 yards, three TD), Josh Jarboe (30, 413, two TD) and Taylor Stockemer (21, 332, one TD) are their three best playmakers on offense. In last season’s 24-31 loss to the Golden Panthers, Aplin went 8 of 19 passing for 126 yards and two touchdowns with no picks.
Florida International
The Golden Panthers have been a pleasant surprise this season. Florida International (4-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) opened the season 3-0 with impressive wins over North Texas, Louisville and UCF. They would go on to drop back-to-back home games to LA-Lafayette and Duke by a combined nine points, but improved to 2-0 on the road with a 27-17 victory at Akron last week. The Panthers outgained the Zips 524-269 behind 308 passing yards from Wesley Carroll.
FIU ranks 53rd in the country in total offense (404.7 yards/game) and 46th in total defense (352.0 yards/game). Carroll is off to a very impressive start, completing 63.8 percent of his passes for 1,232 yards with six touchdowns and only one interception. He went 21 of 27 passing for 266 yards with one touchdown and one pick in their 31-24 victory over Arkansas State last year.
T.Y. Hilton has been Carroll’s favorite target, catching 37 balls for 641 yards with four touchdowns. He had 11 grabs for 140 yards and a score in last year’s meeting with the Red Wolves. Wayne Times is another top target as he has 30 receptions for 308 yards and a touchdown. Kedrick Rhodes (516 yards, six TD) and Darriet Perry (318 yards, five TD) form a solid 1-2 punch in the backfield.
Betting Trends
The Panthers have gone 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 road games overall. However, FIU is 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog of 3.0-10.0, including 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as a road underdog of 3.0-10.0.
The Red Wolves are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall, and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games. They haven’t responded well after success, though, going 16-34-1 ATS in their last 51 games following a S.U. win.
