Florida Marlins at Chicago Cubs Preview
Written April 29, 2009 by Jack Jones
Two teams who have been struggling recently will meet up on Thursday when the Florida Marlins head to Chicago to take on the Cubs. The Marlins were the talk of baseball early on when they started off 11-1, but then the team sufffered seven straight losses to get back to reality. Now Florida is at 13-8 and looking to build off a two-game winning streak when they face the Cubs. Chicago has had to deal with some injury problems and that’s a big reason they are currently at 10-10. Milton Bradley, Derrick Lee, and Aramis Ramirez are all banged up, which has played a part in Chicago dropping six of their last eight. However, they are favored against the Marlins with the line being -120 for the Cubs and +110 for Florida. The baseball odds on the total have not yet been set, due to the usual delay to see whether that Chicago wind is blowing in or out.
Right-hander Chris Volstad is getting the start for Florida and he has looked good in the early goings. He is 2-0 on the year with a 2.70 ERA and 1.16 WHIP and coming off a strong outing against Philadelphia. Against the Phillies he threw seven innings and gave up just 4 hits, but two of those were home runs. He has struck out 22 batters so far this season in 23.3 innings, but there is some concern with the 12 free passes he’s given out. Volstad has made two starts against the Cubs and has gone 12 innings, giving up just four earned runs. The Marlins though need to be able to score to win this game, and so far this year they are batting only .229 away from home and .216 in their last seven games. However, Florida is 9-4 the past three seasons against the Cubs, including 5-2 at Wrigley.
Sean Marshall gets the nod for the Cubbies, and he’s been pretty mediocre to start the year. The left-hander has a 4.91 ERA and 1.46 WHIP through two starts, both of which came against the St. Louis Cardinals. Marshall has made four starts against the Marlins, going 1-3 with a 4.57 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. He’s lost his last three outings to the Fish dating back to May of 2006. Chicago’s offense did not look good yesterday against Arizona, which isn’t a real surprise since they have scored just 4.1 runs per game over their last seven, with a .298 on-base percentage over that span. Teh team is scroing just 4.1 rpg at home as well, with a .248 batting average.
