Florida vs Ole Miss College Football Predictions

Written September 25, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This Saturday the No. 4 ranked Florida Gators will host the Ole Miss Rebels in what will be both teams 2nd game of SEC action. The Gators got off on the right foot with a stomping of Tennessee and are now a perfect 3-0. The Rebels opener didn’t go as well, as they suffered a 23-17 loss at the hands of Vandy. With the loss the Rebels evened their record at 2-2, and will have to pull off a near miracle to win t this weekend. The odds makers see it the same way as BetUS.com has the Gators as 22 point favorites over the Rebels, with the total currently sitting at an even 50.

This will be the home opener for the Gators in conference play, and its likely they come out with a bang,as the Gator offense has been running wild on teams so far this season scoring 112 points in its first 3 games. Though last years Heisman winner Tim Tebow isn’t putting up numbers that will likely land him the award again this season, he isn’t disappointing by any means. So far Tebow has been nearly perfect through the air throwing 5 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, and he has been good enough on the ground to lead the Gator rushing attack. Gator wide receiver Percy Harvin is the teams other duel threat, as he is not only one of the better receivers, he has been solid running the football as well. As long as Tebow and Harvin are healthy this offense will continue to put up big numbers.

While all the talk usually surrounds the offense and everything it does, the Gators defense is only giving up 6.3 points a game this season, and allowing teams to muster up just over 200 yards a game. The scary part about this is, the Gators have played legit opponents so far. The defense not only shuts down the run (2.4 ypc) it has been great against the pass as well (8.3 ypc). On top of that the defense has already totaled 9 takeaways and found their way to the quarterback 7 times before he has been able to get rid of it. If this defense continues to play like this, this team will continue to get more and more talk at getting back to the national title game. Bet Gators -22 at BetUS.com

Things aren’t going so good for the Rebels and the team really showed how much it is struggling on the offensive side of things last week, as quarterback Jevan Snead had 4 interceptions while completing less than 50% of his passes. Besides the shaky play of Snead there were a couple bright spots last week, as receiver Dexter McCluster had 132 yards, and running back Cordera Eason ran for 88 yards on just 12 attempts. If this unit wants any chance of keeping this one close they have to limit the turnovers, and stick to the run as much as they can.

The Rebels defense has played pretty well this season, and again played well enough to win last week against Vanderbilt. The fact that the offense didn’t matters giving the other team great field position, this one could of been worse than it was. With the offense being so mediocre this defense isn’t going to have the best numbers, and thats likely the case on why its giving up over 300 yards a game. We don’t expect the offense to get better in just one week, so expect the Gators to do plenty of damage. Bet Rebels +22 at BetUS.com

Jason Lowry loves the Gators at home against the Rebels, and he sees no reason why the Gators won’t cover in this one, in fact he sees the final score coming out Florida 42 Mississippi 10.
