Florida State at Clemson Spread

Written November 6, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

This used to get a lot of attention because it was the Bowden vs. Bowden matchup, but this game still has plenty of importance on the ACC race. Clemson is coming off some big showings of late, beating up on Wake Forest and then upending Miami in Florida. Florida State has put it together enough to win two close games in the last two weeks, which has given them a chance to salvage something out of this season. The Clemson Tigers are trying to keep up with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the ACC race. Clemson lost at Maryland earlier this year in a shocking road loss that really hurt the teams chances. After that loss Clemson has bounced back in a big way and has climbed right back into the title picture in the ACC. C.J. Spiller is undoubtedly the main main for the Clemson Tigers. Spiller and has amazing breakaway speed are a sight to see. Earlier this year defenses seemed to have him figured out, but Spiller has gotten back to hurting teams in a big way lately. Kyle Parker has been a little inconsistent at quarterback for the Tigers, but he has played much better of late. The coaches want to see Parker cut down on his mistakes and control the game effectively. The Tigers have a very strong defense that is holding opponents to just 16.5 points per game and just 278 yards per game. The defense has been able to keep them in every single game this year.

Quite simply put the Florida State Seminoles have been a big disappointment for the majority of this year. College football picks experts have been burned by them numerous times this season. What is also very evident about this team is that they don’t have even close to as good of a defense as the Seminole teams of the past. Christian Ponder and the offense have things rolling nicely now, but they do need help from the defense. Ponder is a terrific dual threat quarterback who has improved his decision making greatly in the past year. With a completion percentage of 69.4% and a touchdown to interception ratio of 13 to 3 Ponder is proving very efficient with the football. Jermaine Thomas has been the leading rusher for the Seminoles, but sometimes the rushing attack is lead by Christian Ponder when their backs are against the wall. The Seminoles have five receivers with over 25 receptions, so depth at receiver isn’t an issue. The defense has been absolutely torched this season, giving up 39.3 points per game in their last 3 games. For the year the Seminoles allow 183 yards on the ground per game, which is very troubling.

The college football odds for this week show Clemson as a 9.5 point home favorite in this one. The posted total has been set at 58. Interestingly, the home team is 10-1 against the spread in their last 11 match ups.

These two teams are not a bit alike. Clemson has a great defense and runs the ball well while Florida State has a bad defense and throws the ball very well on offense. I expect Clemson’s front four to put some pressure on Ponder and slow down the Seminoles enough to win this one behind a great effort from Spiller. Football picks have been all over the board on this game, but Clemson is the pick to cover in this one even though it is tough to get a read on the Seminoles.
