College Football Odds: Florida State vs North Carolina
Written October 20, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
In what will be the football program’s biggest game in quite some time, the North Carolina Tar Heels host the Florida State Seminoles this Thursday night in primetime. The Seminoles are one of the biggest disappointments in all of college football, and North Carolina has yet to live up to their preseason top 25 status. This is a game that could very well determine which path the rest of the season will take for both of these teams.
Bobby Bowden’s seat is very hot in Tallahassee after the Seminoles have lost three straight following a big win at BYU. Florida State seems to be finding ways to lose of late, with uncharacteristically poor defense at the forefront of their problems. Junior quarterback Christian Ponder has been the bright spot for the team, completing 68% of his passes and throwing 9 touchdowns to just 1 interception. Ponder is also a mobile quarterback, so he gives a defense a whole lot to think about. Other than Ponder the Seminoles haven’t had a consistent running threat this season, which makes them pretty one dimensional at times. Ty Jones has shown glimpses of greatness, but they need more consistency out of the tailback spot. The defense gave up 49 points last weekend to Georgia Tech, and they are averaging giving up 428 yards per game. That simply won’t get it done in the long run, and the Seminoles defense will have to pick it up if they are going to contend. North Carolina had high expectations going into this season, but the team hasn’t performed very well. Even in their wins they have looked quite shaky, and a 16-3 home loss at Virginia two weeks ago was a real letdown. The Tar Heels are 4-2, but two of their wins have come against Citadel and Georgia Southern. T.J. Yates hasn’t had the kind of season most were expecting, throwing 7 picks to just 6 touchdowns so far this year. The running game has been very poor, and the offense as a whole has really let them down in games against top competition so far this season. Against Georgia Tech and Virginia they scored 7 and 3 points respectively. The defense of the Tar Heels has been pretty good thus far, especially against the pass.
The college football odds show the Tar Heels are favored by 2.5 points for this Thursday night ACC battle. Both North Carolina and Florida State are just 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 ACC games, so something has to give in this matchup. The road team is 7-2 against the spread in the last 9 meetings between these two teams.
Both of these teams are so difficult to figure out, so it is extremely hard to tell what may occur this Thursday night. The Tar Heels need this win badly, but so do the Seminoles. One would think that both teams would show up ready to play. The key matchup here will probably be Florida State’s passing game against a strong Tar Heels secondary. Can the Tar Heels make the Seminoles a running team? If they can they will probably win this one.
