2010 Food City 500 Predictions

The 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is ready to get back in action after taking a week off just four races into the season. In the last race Kurt Busch was able to defend his title at the Kobalt Tools 500, but the headlines were taken over by the actions of Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski, which ended up in Edwards sending Keselowski’s car flying through the air. While Edwards only receiver probation for his actions, there were many that thought he should have received a more severe punishment.

This week drivers gear up for the 2010 Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, where drivers will get their first crack at a short track this season. Last year it was Kyle Busch who took home the checkered flag at this event, holding off Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson. Busch will not only be looking to defend his title this weekend, but will also be looking for his first win of the 2010 season. With the race just a couple of days away, here are my three favorites to enter victory lane this weekend.

Kurt Busch: I am sticking with the hot driver this week, as you not only have a guy who won the last event, but has won five times at Bristol throughout his career, with four of them coming at the Food City 500.  Busch may find some competition from his brother Kyle, who has won this event twice in the last three seasons, but he has really struggled of late to find the winners circle. The one concern I have with Busch this weekend, is he hasn’t been very consistent to start the season, with two top 10 finishes and two finishes ouside of the top 20.

Matt Kenseth: For the second straight season, Kenseth has got off to a great start. In 2009 he started off with back to back wins at the Daytona 500 and Auto Club 500. In 2010 Kenseth has yet to see the checkered flag, but to has been right there in every race finishing no worse than 8th.  Kenseth’s best finish of the season came a couple weeks ago at the Kobalt Tools 500, where he finished second to Busch. There is a good chance that Kenseth will keep it going this weekend, as he has two career victories at Bristol. If you are looking for a guy who should be right there with a chance to win, then take Kenseth this weekend.

Kasey Kahne: My final pick this weekend is a bit of a sleeper, as Kahne hasn’t won at Bristol in his career, but to his credit he has raced pretty well here of late, including a 5th place finish at this event last year and a 7th place finish back in 2008. Kahne is also coming off two great starts after starting the season with back to back finishes outside the top 30, as he finished 9th at the Shelby American and 4th at the Kobalt Tools 500.
