The point is simply that it takes a good deal of judgement to get games correct however you do it. Put another way one has to use judgement to choose a tipster and then select amongst his tips.
It also depends on your own abilities. In NCAAB and NFL, for instance, I listen to nobody in terms of what I bet on. In MLB, however, I am like an abandoned kitten, and I just take Jack's tips and bet them, varying only having regard to getting the recommended price or something close (if the price has gone badly, no bet)
I am definitely for showing one's own judgement explicitly though - after all it is your money. However, a competent alternative voice may still help, if only when gauging the strength of your selections. Even in NCAAB, for instance, where I am confident, I would likely increase the bet if Jack indicates agreement and decrease it if he disagrees with it. It is also a general confidence-increaser that we seem to agree more often than we disagree.
Having said all that, in NBA I honestly don't know how I would look at things to gain an advantage over his selections - so I would sort of be doing myself and the competition a bit of a disservice if I represented anything else as the best I could come up with under any circumstances.
There is a great deal to be said for individual skill handicapping, but there is also a great deal to be said for a simple process of getting the most winners!
Well said dublin.
Back to the well again.
