Fresno State vs Cincinnati College Football Lines & Picks
Written September 24, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
The Fresno State Bulldogs have made a little bit of a mark on the college football map over the last few years with Coach Pat Hill and his staff leading the way. Last year and so far this year Brian Kelly and the Cincinnati Bearcats have jumped onto the national radar very quickly. This Saturday’s noon matchup between these schools vying for national attention should be a solid game full of plenty of fireworks. Cincinnati’s Bearcats shocked the college football world last year by making it to a BCS game, and this year they want to do the same and change the end result. Tony Pike is a senior leader for the Bearcats and he runs the offense absolutely brilliantly. Mardy Gilyard is a huge threat at wide receiver as well as a return specialist. The Bearcats love to use the no huddle offense and a keep a defense on their toes and unable to substitute. The spread formation is used quite often, and while they do run the ball fairly effectively from time to time, the team is certainly a pass heavy football team. Last week’s 28-18 win at Oregon State served notice that the Bearcats are for real this season, and if anything they are a better team than the one that stormed through the Big East last year. The defense seems to have improved quite substantially which should help Cincinnati in the big games this year.
Fresno State had a very disappointing season last year and they have had two tough this season after defeating UC Davis in the season opener. The Bulldogs lost in overtime at Wisconsin to start out the season and then lost in last week’s shootout with Boise State despite an amazing effort from their star running back Ryan Mathews. Fresno State doesn’t have any standout at quarterback, so they are just looking for solid play and good ball control. The defense has had serious issues both last year and this year, and if the team is going to make this matchup a contest it will need the defense to step up in a big way.
The line opened at Cincinnati -14, but it has continued to move in the Bearcats direction as the week has gone by, and the current college football lines have the Bearcats -16.5. This will be the Bearcats first big game at home this year and the school is promoting this as a “white out” game for all the fans to wear white and cheer the team to victory. The over/under has opened at 62 points for this game, which should certainly have plenty of offense to go around. The key matchups are likely the Fresno State pass defense vs. Tony Pike and the passing attack and the Fresno State rushing attack against the Cincinnati defense.
The Bearcats are for real this season as Rutgers and Oregon State can attest to, and I would certainly expect the Bearcats to put a whole of points in the board in this matchup and likely cover the spread. If you are looking for a game with offense and two teams looking to prove a point this game should be the perfect game for you!
