Sergio Garcia Odds to Win the Masters
Written by Jason Lowry
There aren’t many golfers that are as good as Sergio Garcia, who haven’t won a major championship. Garcia once again let a major slip away from him at the 2008 PGA Championship, as he had a lead going into the final 9 holes, but was unable to hold on and wound up finishing two strokes back to the eventual champion Padraig Harrington. It seems as though Garcia’s day will come, and he will win a major before his career is over, as he has 9 top 5 finishes between the 4 major events and has a number of years left on tour, as he is only 29. While there is no question Garcia has the game to win at Augusta, his play of late at the Masters would make it a big surprise if he was anywhere near the top of the leader board over the weekend.
The reason we say it would be such a surprise to see Garcia near the top of the Masters this weekend, is he has been pretty awful here at Augusta over the last 4 years. After finishing 4th here in 2004, Garcia has failed to make the cut in 3 of the past 4 years, and finished 46th the one year he made it to the weekend. Garcia has one other top 10 finish at Augusta coming back in 2002 when he finished in 8th place, but that has to seem like forever ago for Garcia. Maybe he figured things out with his great play at the end of last season that included a win at The Players Championship, his great finish at the PGA Championship, and the fact that he won his first European Tour title in over 3 years.
Splitting time between the PGA Tour and the European Tour doesn’t allow us to see Garcia as much as we would like, but you can typically find his name in any big event on the PGA Tour. Garcia though has played in just 4 PGA Tour events this season, and it hasn’t been that good for the Spaniard, as he his best finish is a tie for 13th at the Honda Classic. If last week was any indicator of how Garcia is going to play this week, then he might be better off staying home, as Garcia finished tied for 77th last week at the Shell Houston Open, including a final round of 81 on Sunday. Bet Garcia +2500 to win the Masters.
It won’t be easy for “El Nino” this week at the Masters, but don’t count this guy out just yet, as he is very capable of playing well this week. In order for Garcia to do that he has to play well on Thursday and Friday, as he has really struggled coming out of the gates at Augusta. Hopefully Garcia can do just that, as it would be a lot of fun to watch him go up against Tiger, Phil, and all the other great golfers for four full rounds of exciting golf.
