Georgetown at Duke College Basketball Predictions
Written January 22, 2009 by Jay Horne
The Duke Blue Devils host the Georgetown Hoyas in a big conference showdown between the ACC and the Big East. The Big East has broken a record placing 9 teams in the Top 25 this season and appears to be the best conference in America. However, the ACC has been College Basketball’s best conference over the past two decades and they are not ready to hand over the crown. The Blue Devils lone loss this season came by the way of the Michigan Wolverine, but they have rebounded with 7 straight wins. Georgetown on the other hand has been beaten up by a tough schedule, but grabbed a big win over no. 8 Syracuse on Wednesday night.
Georgetown has a chance to really help the Big East reputation if they can pull a victory in Durham, NC this Saturday. The Hoyas are 2-1 this season against top ten ranked teams and they look to add another impressive win to the resume. Georgetown junior DeJuan Summers is playing exceptionally well and leads the team in scoring with 15 points per game shooting an outstanding 54% from the floor and 45% from behind the arc. Georgetown is shooting a strong 48% from the floor as a team this season while scoring 74 points per game. However, Georgetown will be facing with one of the best scoring teams in America and must find away to slow down a strong Blue Devil scoring team.
Duke ranks 14th in college basketball with 81 points per game. However, the Blue Devils defense is the real reason to their success. Duke has held opponents to only 60 point per game and consistently provides tough defensive schemes that opponents have a hard time overcoming. Kyle Singler leads the team in scoring with 16.7 points per game. Jon Scheyer and Gerald Henderson both average 13 points and have really proven that they can be big time performers. Duke edge in this game comes from the rebounding category. The Blue Devils rank 29th averaging slightly over 40 rebounds per game while Georgetown ranks in the bottom half of nation with only 33 boards on average. The Blue Devils will try to control the second chance opportunities and defeat one of the best teams in the Big East at home this Saturday.
The game will be very interesting considering how both teams match-up with one another. Both teams are quick and force a lot of turnovers. Georgetown freshmen Greg Monroe has tremendous potential to become a huge inside presence for the Hoyas. The 6’11 youngster is averaging 13.5 points per game along with 7 rebounds and is no where near reached his potential. Monroe will need to grab some rebounds this Saturday and give Georgetown some second chance opportunities considering they have struggled on the glass this season. Both teams shoot the ball very well and Duke takes a ton more shots from the perimeter. The game will come down to how well the Blue Devils shoot from the outside and if Georgetown can execute some points within the paint.
Prediction – Georgetown can not afford to lose their 4th game this early in the year and Duke has not faired well with out of conference games. Take Georgetown
