The Georgetown Hoyas looked like they are ready to get back into the top 10 as they defeated a very tough Marquette team 70-68 in OT. The Hoyas needed a big comeback late to bring home the victory and move them closer to another Big East Title. They are currently 24-4 overall and currently a half game ahead of Louisville for first place in the Big East Conference. The Hoyas rolled through non-conference play with their only hiccup coming against one of the best teams in the nation in Memphis. The team has impressive wins against Notre Dame and Connecticut. The team has struggled away from home as they have lost all 4 of their games on the road, which made its latest victory even more impressive as it was at Marquette. The Hoyas started the season pretty high in the rankings before falling out of the top 10, but will have all the opportunities to make up for things with a big game at Louisville and the Big East Tournament.John Thompson III, who is the son of the legendary John Thompson that led the Hoyas back when Patrick Ewing roamed the Hoyas frontcourt, leads the Hoyas. They have another one of the best big men in the game with Senior Roy Hibbert, who is averaging 13 PPG and 6.4 RPG. While Hibbert is the leader in both those categories, he also leads the team on defense averaging 2.3 blocks a game and challenges many others. DaJuan Summers is a talented forward who is second to Hibbert in both scoring and rebounds with 11.5 PPG and 5.3 RPG. Jonathon Wallace is the team’s perimeter threat as he is hitting 43% from behind the ark and averaging 10 PPG along with 2.6 APG. Guards Jessie Sapp and Austin Freeman finish up the starting rotation both bringing in over 9 PPG. The team also has one of the most underappreciated six mans in the game in Patrick Ewing Jr. Ewing Jr. is the son of the great Patrick Ewing and while he doesn’t have the skills his dad had he is a big reason these guys are so good. Ewing isn’t flashy as he only averages 6.2 PPG and 4.1 RPG, but he does a lot of the dirty work that goes unnoticed.

The Hoyas only have one regular season game remaining, and it’s a big one, as they face Louisville Cardinals for what will be a match up for the Big East regular season title. While Louisville still has a game remaining, even if they lose and fall a game behind Georgetown, the title will still be up for grabs. Since Louisville handed them a 51-59 loss at the beginning of February, they would hold the tiebreaker advantage with a second win over the Hoyas. The Hoyas win or lose will head as one of the favorites in the Big East Tournament.

The Hoyas are going to be a tough team come NCAA Tournament time regardless of how they finish the season. They can play shut down defense and have experience from last years tournament, where they made it all the way to the Final Four before losing to Ohio St. They are minus star forward Jeff Green who left early for the NBA, but still have a good enough lineup to make it back to the Final Four again in 2008.
