In a crucial Big East showdown Wednesday, the 11th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas will take on the No. 12 Syracuse Orange in the Carrier Dome. This contest will be nationally televised on ESPN at 7:00 EST for those of you interested in tuning in. The Orange have not lost three in a row at the Carrier Dome since a loss to Georgetown nine years ago. In fact, that was the last time they lost at home to the Hoyas. The spread for this game show us a line of Syracuse -4.5 over Georgetown with a total set of 140 points.
Syracuse (20-4, 7-4) is coming off back-to-back road victories, and now will be looking to continue their home success in this rivalry. The Orange have won 11 of their last 12 home meetings with Georgetown, including six straight at the Carrier Dome in this series. These teams met there last season both ranked in the top seven in the land, and Syracuse put a beat down on the Hoyas by a final of 73-56. Georgetown would have their revenge though, winning 91-84 at Madison Square in the quarterfinal of the conference tournament.
Georgetown (18-5, 7-4) comes into this game as the hottest team in the Big East. The Hoyas have reeled off six straight victories, including an 83-81 win over Providence on Saturday. Chris Wright came up with a huge steal on the game’s final play which prevented the Hoyas from blowing an 18-point lead. The Friars came back thanks in part to 11 missed 3-pointers and seven missed free throws from Georgetown over the game’s final nine minutes.
Wright’s eyes must light up when he sees orange. The senior guard is putting up 19.8 points per game in his last four meetings with Syracuse. He was the catalyst of their victory in the conference tournament last year, scoring 27 points while dishing out six assists and grabbing six rebounds. Wright ranks third in the Big East in assists (5.4). Austin Freeman has been unstoppable of late, averaging 22.2 points during their six-game winning streak. Freeman ranks third in the conference in points per game (18.7). The senior averaged 20.7 points in three games against the Orange last year.
The Orange have not lost three straight at home since their last home loss to Georgetown in 2002. After a loss to then-No. 7 Villanova and a blowout loss to Seton Hall by a final of 68-90, Syracuse would match that streak with a defeat Wednesday. All four of their losses this season came in a row during a tough stretch late last month. The Orange are clearly back on track, though, winning at then-No. 6 Connecticut before pummeling South Florida 72-49 on Saturday. Over those two victories, Rick Jackson has led the way by totaling 34 points and 25 rebounds on 14-of-24 shooting. His 58.3 percent shooting and 11.5 rebounds per game are tops in the Big East. Jackson has recorded 16 double-doubles this year.
