Georgetown at Villanova

The No. 21 Georgetown Hoyas visit the seventh-ranked Villanova Wildcats Saturday in Big East action. This Top 25 tussle will tip at 12:00 EST and can be seen on ESPN for all of those interested in tuning in. The Hoyas come in on a three-game winning streak, while the Wildcats look to rebound from a bad loss at Providence last time out. The odds are posted for this game, showing us a line of Villanova -5 over Georgetown with a total set of 145 points.
Georgetown (15-5, 4-4) got off to a brutal 1-4 start in Big East action. But they have responded well, winning three straight in conference play thanks to excellent efforts from both Austin Freeman and Jason Clark. Freeman is averaging 22.3 points and hitting 55.3 percent of his shots during this 3-game winning streak, while Clark is shooting 56.6 percent and scoring 12.3 points over that same stretch. This is a team that shoots very well from the floor, ranking second nationally at 50.8 percent.
Villanova (17-3, 5-2) know first-hand how touch it is to defend Freeman and Clark. These teams split both meetings last season, and the Wildcats could not stop that duo. Clark put up 20.0 points and shot 59.1 percent from the floor in those two games, while Freeman scored 23.5 points on 59.9 percent shooting. The Wildcats have some studs at guard as well, and will be looking to get Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes going. Their two leading scorers shot just 4-of-26 and combined for 14 points in their 68-83 loss to Providence Wednesday.
Fisher leads the Wildcats in scoring at 15.6 points per game, while Stokes is in a close second at 15.4 per contest. Stokes has not fared well in five previous meetings with the Hoyas, averaging 6.8 points on 25.6 percent shooting. He’s having by far the best year of his career, and the senior will be looking to make amends as this will be the only meeting of the season between these teams unless they meet in the Big East or NCAA Tournaments.
Georgetown still doesn’t have a win over a Big East team that has a .500 record or better. Their recent winning streak came against the likes of Rutgers, Seton Hall and St. John’s. That’s why it’s hard to put the Hoyas up there as a serious contender in this conference, though they do have a Big 3 that is tough to tame. Freeman is scoring 18.3 points per game, Clark is averaging 12.9 per contest and Chris Wright is putting up 12.8 per game for Georgetown. The Hoyas do have history on their side, winning six of the last seven meetings. Villanova has been unstoppable at home, though, going 11-0 including 3-0 at Wells Fargo Center.
BetUS Projected Score: Villanova 75 – Georgetown 70
